395xp sprocket replacement

I got a 395 xp with a 36 in bar and 404 chain at a good price. I want to change it over to a 28 in 3/8 bar chain combo. I have a 3/8 sprocket to put on it and I ordered a bar and chain for it. My question is do I need a special tool to remove the clutch and replace the sprocket? I have yet been able to sit down and get into it. Just thought I would ask first before I start fooling with it.

Isn't the sprocket a 'rim sprocket'? If it is, all you need to do is remove an "E" clip, pull off the washer, remove the old sprocket and replace.
If it isn't a rim and is a "spur", I think you need a 17mm socket to remove it. But, it's left hand threaded. So, righty loosy, lefty tidy. An air gun will work or you need a piston stop.

You don't need any special tools. I have 3 395's. What you do is if you have an impact wrench is simplest. I believe it's 3/4" socket in FORWARD (clockwise) to take off the clutch First pull the starter cord out a little so it doesn't possibly break the cord. Don't use the impact to put it back on.
Option 2 which I usually do out in the field get some small rope like 1/4" or so any kind and push it down the spark plug hole when the piston is down (and the starter cord is out) then put the big side of your saw wrench on and take off the clutch like before. It'll be tight. Replace the sprocket and put back together then pull the rope out of the cylinder and GET TO WORK!!!!
Good luck!

Norm you are describing how to do a stihl.

My apologies. Thanks for setting me straight.

Careful when you put that starter cord down the bore. I had a trainee jam the piston solid during a lesson on saw maintenance last year.

She got the cord in the transfer port and forced the piston up! Saw was totaly scrapped i spent a day being delicate after relesing the head bolts, then i just used force to get it out so we could see the damage.
Its still above the bench as a lesson to all to use a piston stop.

take it easy..

Thank you for the advise. It was simple. only took a couple of minitues. I did shear off a vary small pice of rope in the exhaust port. luckly I inspected the cylinder with a flash ligh befor replacing the spark plug and found it. A dab of greas on the end of a slim screwdriver reatreaved it easly. Thanks again
