3 to 1 mech. adv. for hitch climber

You can do something like this - it's just a Ropeman above your hitch with a carabiner. You need to advance it while ascending, but if left in place for a limb walk, it makes a nice little 3:1 to pull yourself back in.

Would adding a micro-pulley to the carabiner give you an even greater advantage?

Not more "advantage" just less friction. Which of course could be considered an advantage!

Perhaps it is best to define " advantage" as we use it in tree work as the amplification of force? Seems fair to me.

Rigging to disadvantage then, would be the amplification of force on the anchor not the load. It is important to remember that a 5:1 MA system rigged to "advantage" puts 5X the force on the load, but also 4X the load on the anchor.

Obviously I think about this shit too much!

Good call on the 6:1. Just tossed it together in the cubicle and wasnt thinking about it too much. Very slow indeed. I haven't used it for ascending, just used it for a couple limbwalks.
I know this is an old post but it came up.
I just have to add regards to this 6:1 you pictured. It becomes a 5:1 complex pulley system when you are lifting someone else and returns to 6:1 as soon as you both are together and climbing/descending. Difference between hauling system and climbing system without changing the configuration.

Being my first climb ever yesterday (and out of shape @255lbs) i found myself going nowhere DdRT natural crotch with the hitch climber and no other mechanical devices (foot/hand/knee acenders). I just threw a prusik and a micro pulley as far as i could reach on the line, looped the tail through it and back down to me. Got me going but nowhere fast, plus had to tend both the prusik up top and the hitch at the HC but i made it up the tree.

More of my excuse to buy more gear..

It's great exercise, though. In early spring I took out a couple of trees and dropped 13 pounds. That rate slowed way down throughout the summer, but I did manage to lose about 18 pounds total. Now, if I can just keep it off...

1:1 is the ratio you're looking for, trust me.

I'm def in need of dropping some weight. I plan to be at the gym all winter and climb like hell come nice weather next spring!
