I attached the slings in haste (Without letting the hook settle) on that stump and had already completed the horizontal cut before I thought about it. As we were so close to that fragile wall, had the crane alignment been off-set towards in the wall direction, it would have taken a clout with inevitable damage.
The sloping-cut not only created an initial barrier but made it very easy to read which way the chunk was going to shift on completion of the severance. I came in at a very acute angle so not only creating a taller ‘initial’ barrier, but also to allow for a more sensitive reading due to the greater distance my saw had to travel to meet up with the horizontal cut.
I’ve learnt through experience to listen the nagging little voice that pops into my head before passing a point of no return. I used to block it out and convince myself ‘It’ll be alright’…. but it never was! A lot of good work can be ruined if you slack at that final hurdle.
