2nd Ditch Witch roller bearing failure

How do you like the 900?
We like it not sure if it’s any better than a 800 but Kubota engines were on back order so DW put yanmar engines and called it a 900
I was offered a 900 for $1500 additional and 2 month wait vs 6 more for a 800. We already were 6 months waiting on a 800.

I do know 25hp Kubota are pretty much bulletproof besides being cold blooded

Time will tell about the Yanmar but so far so good

That’s the third idler spindle to bend and the drive motor shaft sheared on the right side at ~400hrs. We do ask lots of it and are working in rural areas, roots, tip-and-mound woods, ledge heavy coastal. Two spindles and drive shaft on one side in 1k hrs just seems wrong.
Maybe the club looking piece which holds the rear idler and slides with the grease ram has too much play side to side? I’m baffled and $160 per with shop time each time. Thankfully have two spares in the shop as now they’re probably $190…
Roots are just as bad as curbs 100%

We are based on an island dominated by red spruce. Guessing avg soil depth of…6”? Lots of exposed roots and rocks, we make tons of chip trails for access but not always feasible.

Yeah you might want to have spares at all times unfortunately.
Jobs that cause more maintenance get charged more because of the abuse!

Today if I was to walk in a dealer and both 800 and 900 was sitting there and the 800 was cheaper by even 1k I would buy the 800.
Not that I don’t like my 900 but I don’t think there’s much of a difference.

Horse stall mats help even out rough terrain. Not the best but they work, heavy SOBs. I used them on a job where my only access was a drainage made up of football/basketball sized rocks.

I had issues with our 755 in regards and some other issues that led us to move away from buying another. I bought it used and understand not everyone treats their equipment as well as I do. We had some major parts replaced before our purchase as part of the agreement. We replaced quite a few of those spindles and undercarriage parts and some hydraulic components. I after quite a bit of use and time questioned some of the parts were as durable as required for the application. That said I had plenty of success with DW in my kit as well and still have sk350 and sk755 for when the time comes and we need super small or combo up for jobs. Lately they seem to sit an awful lot after I got an articulated mini loader!

You're using the old housing and replacing bearings, right? I was advised against that by my local DW mechanic, who did not seem to be price gouging when he said it. He noted that the success of repairing rollers was uneven so they had gone away from it.
