2014 Picture of the Year

So, would you also be OK if your auto insurance selected which shop did the repairs?

Good point, I was assuming the insurance company would hire a good tree service. However, that does not mean what I consider to be good, would be what you consider to be good. I guess in the end the homeowner who is paying the insurance should have a say in who works on their property.

I just know around us, it is quit a game to get insurance companies, homeowners, and tree care service all on the same page. After a storm hits, everyone wants it done right away, but they don't want to pay, they want their insurance to pay. Which I completely understand. I would too. Then you have to wait for an adjuster to come out, and then you have to supply a few bids. I was just trying to think of a way to make it a little more simpler.

damn...that's scary
That thing flew almost 40 ft, missing myself, the two homeowners and their two cars. It impacted 2 feet below a large bay window on the house. Thankfully, the only damage was some broken siding, it could have been much worse. The pulley had the highest breaking strength of any component in the system.

I have one...that could have killed somebody.

What broke it?

The nut looks very rusty for only being a month old.
Right you are, I retract that statement. We had a new one on the job that day (boss bought a couple due to the storm work), but this must have been the older one. My mistake, thanks for catching that.

What broke it?
We were using it as a redirect to pull a large poplar stem that was leaning heavily sideways over the customer's deck. I notched and left plenty of hinge (in hindsight maybe too much) and signalled for my groundman to start driving ahead slowly. The stem cleared the deck, but before I could signal for the driver to stop the pulley gave out. Very frightening situation. My two guesses as to why it broke are either it got side loaded somehow, judging by the bent side plates, or the biner it was attached too ripped through it (improbable, but not impossible).

In all honesty I didn't inspect this pulley on this day. It was our last job of the day, getting late, and we'd been going flat out. I was pretty beat and it was a fairly straight forward job and I got careless. We don't use the pulleys very often so I assumed it was OK. More than likely there was a flaw or previous damage that I wasn't aware of.

Decided to give myself a tribal tat with a chainsaw

Wow, if I was ever to get cut by a chainsaw I would want it to look just like that! I'm just not into that whole thing...it's cool now but what will it look like in 30 years, you know? I'm not into deforming my body just to make a statement. Quick question...Does it wrap all the way around the bicep or did you just get it on the outside only...It's cool either way! You can always add to it later. ;)

Ouch is right, you got really lucky. That could have been much worse.
Surprisingly didn't hurt at all. Felt like a good punch to the arm is all. Just went to the truck, cleaned it, bandaged it, and went back to work. I know how lucky I was though, I easily could have lost an arm or worse.
Clearing overgrown scrub around a chain link fence, made contact, kickback, inertia brake didn't function properly. I think the saving grace is that the saw wasn't at full throttle when it contacted the fence.

I'm not into the whole body modification either and would never do something like this on purpose. Now that it has scarred over it doesn't look too impressive, but it's still a conversation starter whenever I wear a t-shirt. It's just on the outside, what you see is the entire thing and I hope to NEVER add to it!

Here is a poor Fagus! I'm trying to decide if it isn't actually more of a Fungus grandifolia than a Fagus gradifolia. I took these on the last day of 2014... This is the end... maybe I'll find something to represent the beginning a bit later.
