2001 Isuzu FTR (under CDL) Chipper Truck

IMG_1280.webp Heres a pic I found, but doesn't really do it justice from the angle... Crazy Jimmy, the Isuzu should weigh around 13K lbs empty with no machinery... check out the 7th reply on this post for details.

Empty weight of the truck should be around 13,000 lbs without machinery and the Ditch Witch weighs ~ 1,800 lbs with grapple, stump grinder is 700 lbs and bucket is about 200 lbs, so with all equipment on it should weight around 16,000 lbs minus the mulch. The gross COMBINED weight rating on the truck tag is something crazy like 48,000 lbs (GVWR is 29,000 derated to 25,990), so it doesn't have a problem hauling the loads. I have used it as my sole chipper truck for the past 3 years and it has been great... I had to replace a turbo in it a year and a half ago (not uncommon for the mileage) and the transmission synchronizer was out on 3rd gear since I bought the truck so it has been replaced last year, but overall a very reliable truck. I would keep it if I wasn't a one crew operation, although my 16' dump trailer comes in handy for the bigger jobs. My new truck has a 25+ yard capacity so it hasn't been an issue.

The plan was to keep both Zahns for the really big jobs and for stump grinding, but with my Crawler 78 weighing in at a hefty 8,700 lbs, it will probably max out my 14,000 lb dump trailer with it and the lift in there, so I am indifferent about selling it... I could always use the money towards the loan I suppose. @ Crazy Jimmy - the truck was derated from the factory, it just has a 19,000 lb rear axle and 10,000 lb front axle... just like my Kenworth has a 22,000 lb rear axle and 12,000 lb front axle. In summary, it is rated for the bigger loads... just on paper it doesn't require a CDL if you keep the trailer under 10,000 lbs and DOT wont mess with you as long as you are tagged at a high enough weight (never been a problem here anyways, I've spoken with 2 DOT police officers about this).

[QUOTE="SRT4ME, No duals, but is 35.5" wide so perfect for gated yards... too bad Ditch Witch no longer sells them, they are as good as gold for our line of work![/QUOTE]

Did a bit of research. Only the smaller Zahn is discontinued. The Zahn 300 is still in production and should continue for many years.

Awesome... (y)Ditch Witch of Olathe told me that 2014 was the last year for them due to being a "niche" piece of equipment and not selling enough of them. Im glad you heard different because it truly is an awesome machine, niche or not. Gotta love it when you go to an actual dealer and they start making assumptions about a product they sell but dont know about just because they dont see them that often. :endesacuerdo:

At least that is what my dealer told me.

That would scare the crap out of me, only been in a few buckets and never felt comfortable. Good luck with it though, it is a sweet looking machine.

Thanks mlove... the only time I was freaked out on my 15GT was when I was straight up in the air 50' and there were wind gusts... looking down it felt like you had a paperweight underneath you, but you get used to it and in reality the Teupen was a very stable machine. I remember the first day I got it I took my employee up in it with me and we ran out of diesel when we were straight up in the air almost all the way up! We learned a quick lesson that day to always check the fuel level before going up! Luckily my other ground guy filled it up with our 5 gallon container (the Teupen only had a 1.3 gallon fuel tank on it).

Im sure you are already aware of it/taken care of but if not, you really should get yourself some big wide-fat pads to put under your stabilizers, or else thats gonna punch through soft ground as you begin to make use of the machines side reach.

Well, things have picked up. But, I am more acting on a hunch that things are really going to be crazy for me this year. Noah built the ark before the flood. I am trying to get my ark built right now before the flood of calls come in. I could be wrong because I am just going on a hunch, but I just got that feeling.

Just joking around, as I was looking at that also. My only concern for you would be the lovely hills you have.

Yeah, that too is a concern of mine. However, I have a 33K pound bucket truck that is real slow on the hills. I usually lead the way most days. So no matter what the truck is going to go slow. Will it last is the question.
What I like about it is the ability to pull a dump trailer for wood. I could send my guys to go grab wood on Friday for all the jobs of that week. They could roll around with the truck with a dump trailer and the dingo to load. Just a thought. I am still trying to decide what the best option is. I saw this too. But, Look who is selling it. Plus it is gas.
