1st time forum user (GRIGRI) question

What new (grigri like) decender is out there that accommodates 1/2 bluestreak or 1/2 hiVee. Im retiring my original 1st gen grigri and i see there are just too many new choices now. I'm looking to rappel between 40 to 100 feet out of coconut trees. Not too heavy or bulky is best. I'm a 250 lb machete wielding gaffer. Any constructive thoughts?

Seeing your doing it multiple times day in day out, guessing from 90ft consistently? a petzl I’d or rig for light, and ISC D5 for heavy but compact. I have both but the D5 is my favourite and is rated for rescue use as well. Both are easy on ropes.

I have used grigri and like compactness but I found not as easy to use or as smooth.

I do 60ft or shorter palms infrequently and use an sbg2 - a heavy style atc device as is practically pocket carry but is probably not for the frequency of use you are looking at doing.

Good...this was my exact takeaway from the research I've done. I was hoping I missed something, but this works. Still early in my search.

I find really comfortable to use, may be better in a bag than stored on belt when not using.

Can take a bit to wear in. A lot of guys get some old climb rope, wet it and put sand on it, then run it through the device as you pull/walk away from an anchor just to wear it in a bit faster and make it useable quicker as can be a bit stiff to use when new. Then clean of course....

This ISC D5 worked perfect right out of the box, it didn't need any breaking in. They seem to have their engineering on point. I can appreciate breaking in a new harness, boots, gloves, jeans ect. But a highly engineered metal saftey device would only loose integrity with a wet, sandy rope treatment. IMHO

I've used a Grigri 2 on 12mm rope, it worked pretty well. Don't know if 1/2" will work, but I think it could, especially on the new grigri, which is optimised for more rope diameters. Otherwise just get an I'D L or similar.20190423_175849.webp

That looks like all they did for improvements....is there anything else different About the gg3 compared to the gg2??

Is that a gg3? Because I got blue streak 16 strand, very used, at least 5 years old, that barely moves through the gg2.
That rocket line or whatever it is may be newer and thinner? Lmk yo

They changed the shape of the cam on the new one, it is supposed to have a much smoother descent control. I haven’t handled the gg plus or gg3, only the gg2 pictured above. The rope is Tree Runner 12mm 16 strand, fairly new and smooth. It actually measures closer to 13mm, so it's safe to call it a 1/2" line.

Forgot to say how well it worked. Tending slack was pretty smooth, but of course not as smooth as a rope like 10mm or something, on descent I did have to open the cam a lot further than normally, but not quite all the way to the max. You definitely don't want the grigri+ with a thick line, because you'll always hit the panic lock. As mentioned in the grigri for lanyard thread, there is no way the rope pays out without the handle with the 12mm.
