the splitter fan/ring that they use here:

is the coolest!

My Dad told me about a splitter that was used on the farm when he was a kid that was like in NB's vid. the mass of the flywheel did the splitting

Who am I to talk about splitter safety

but those loose shirt tails and the moving parts scares the snot out of me!

a buddy who is a weldor and I cobbled together a splitter using one of those screws.

we used a VW engine...through a 4 speed Saab transmission...to power the unit. It worked OK but was a bit scary. every once in a while a short piece would get stuck on then screw and start flopping around!

Re: 11 more stitches..second phase

surgery went well as far as i can tell

ny hand has a palm splint w/4 fingers wrapped w/ace bandage

my thumb is out but not real useful

mom, jim and his girls were here for a few days so didn't have to deal with food packaging

happy new year!

Re: 11 more stitches..second phase

Glad to hear that the surgery went well and that you've got help around the house for a few days while you're convalescing. Best wishes for a complete and fast recovery in 2010!

Re: 11 more stitches..second phase

Tom, I'm glad to hear that your surgery went well. Hope you recover soon.

What exactly did the surgery consist of? Were the tendons and ligaments damaged as well as the bones?

Re: 11 more stitches..second phase

i haven't talked w/the surgeon yet...appt. on weds

bones reset but this part is 'routine'

nerve repair likely

tedon/l'ment repair likely

Re: 11 more stitches..second phase

I supervised an operation where unemployable guys were given their first job, splitting wood. No matter how well supervised they would get hurt. About one finger every two weeks or a finger per 25 cords. The little known danger I learned with splitters is when placing the block on the splitter if you have your finger between the block and the wedge and throw it down with some momentum you can lose a finger before even advancing the ram. Be careful, stay focused, and heal fast Tom.

Sorry to hear about this Tom.
I don't wish ANY of my fellow tree brothers to get hurt.
Heal up quick, the worlds a better place with you in it climbing and working

Last week I got the OK to use my hand as I see fit. The grip still isn't good enough to do much. A coffee cup is a challenge sometimes.

The tendons/ligaments are all tied down with scar tissue in the knuckle of my pinkie. There is a chance that the surgeon will have to go back in to cut away the scar tissue.

Pinkie makes a hook under the ring finger so it snags on things. Bumping the outside of my hand has almost put me on the floor, tender!!!

The surgeon and my OT team think that I'll have a good recovery. Time will tell.

This is nine finger typing!

Get to splicing, that'll work that grip. Use ice pop stick to hold the pink straight. Or get one of those tape on metal braces from the doc.
