066 flywheel

Yesterday I was cross cutting a Spruce stem with the 066, when the engine stopped suddenly with a awful noise, seems somehow the recoil starter jammed in the flywheel and destroyed itself and the nylon flywheel.
I have ordered a new flywheel opting for the alloy version, my question is how hard is the flywheel to remove and will I need a special tool? I have seen a special Stihl puller tool advertised. but it maybe cheaper to just put the saw into the shop rather than buy tools.

You will almost definately need a tool. They are in there pretty good. See if your dealer will just pop it off for you with his tool, I would do it for my customers, no worries.
The tool shouldnt be all too expensive, $60USD? Handy to have works on many different models.

Thanks Boston,
I can do pretty much most things on a saw but i have never removed the flywheel and I really don't want to destroy the saw using grips and pliers and the likes. I will check the price on that tool, good to know i will definitely need it.

I didn't know you could put the metal alloy one in place of the new nylon style flywheels.

Out of curiosity let me know how the saws runs after you do the switch.

Any word yet? I always heard the nylon fly and metal fly dont interchange on the cranks. That you would have to swap the cranks out to match fly used.

I called round at the shop today to see if they had fixed it yet, seems they found out that your right its impossble to use a alloy fly wheel , so they re ordered for the nylon one, should have it back on tuesday.

The fan blades all snapped off the wheel when the starter jammed, there was just dust left when i popped the sideplate off. It was about minus 10 celcius that morning and i noticed later the starter cord had set hard like steel wire, i think this may have caused the cord to not seat properly on the spool and get snagged, just a theory tho.
