    Direct aiding and tree physics.

Tom - that's absolutely the name of the game. Unfortunately, I don't have any photographs of the trees... they're in Costa Rica, and I'm not right now :) Demo - Pruning isn't the name of the game, it's epiphyte research :-p mateo

    Direct aiding and tree physics.

Sorry about the term confusion... I call this direct aiding, because that's how I know it, and don't know a better term for it. It's simple, two slings of webbing girth hitched around a tree, one clips to your harness, the other is a footloop (I suppose another clip would be good, so I put a...

    Direct aiding and tree physics.

Is anyone here versed in the business of direct aiding a tree??? If so, I would love to hear some tips and tricks for making it easier, because it's not much fun :) Thanks for some input! Also! Does anyone have particular knowledge on the physics and dynamics of how the tree bears the load...

    Normal rope wear?

I know my friend wasn't shock-loading it or using saws. My guess is it just rubbed something the wrong way in coiling. There are two small sections like that, about.. 1-2in long. Norm- I took the pic with a macro lens, so it better be clear :) And I haven't done much climbing at all on 1/2in...

    Normal rope wear?

Ok. Because this is 16 strand, would this compromise the strength of it? Thanks for the replies, I'll have to make sure I don't drag it anything... I am pretty sure I didn't, but a friend of mine was using it for a bit, maybe he did. Or maybe Tom is correct, maybe that Honey Locust bark was...

    Normal rope wear?

Hello all, I am trying out short lines of rope to see which one I want to get... I am deciding between a static kernmantle (either the Fly or Poison Ivy, I am thinking the latter, although I haven't tried it yet because you cannot by it by the foot anywhere) and XTC (if you have thooughts on...

    Best friction knot for srt?

Tom, I got a chance to play around on the UniCender... it's a rad device, I'm thinking about picking one up but Morgan keeps on making it better. Hopefully he'll get to a design that fits well! I haven't seen to the newest version though, can't wait to see your pictures. mateo

    Toad

Mark... hmmm, it sure looks like a species of tree frog. It's hard to tell because he's so over exposed in the photo though, unless the frog was actually white. Then I have no clue. Did he look something more along the lines of this: If so, he's a Grey Tree Frog, Hyla versicolor.. there's...

How do you dress and set your Yosemete?

[ QUOTE ] Mateo; Is the last of your photos upsidedown from the first two? I had trouble following what you did until it occured to me that that is what happened. [/ QUOTE ] Yes. Sorry if that was confusing. mateo

How do you dress and set your Yosemete?

[ QUOTE ] Here is a scan from ON ROPE showing the Yosemite tie-off. [/ QUOTE ] See, the image there has the tail going on the left side of the working end (presumably) not on the right like mine and Kevin's. Will this not hold? Or will it fail, becuase it's not set correctly? Just curious...

How do you dress and set your Yosemete?

The black and red line is XTC Premium from Fresco. I was going to get XTC Fire but they sold out... but I like this better :) mateo

How do you dress and set your Yosemete?

Here is how I do it, and I was wondering if it's correct, because it differs slightly from what Jepson has in the Climber's Companion. But I think this looks neater! From the front: From the back: Close up from the back (the line on the bottom right is the tail): Just curious...

I finally bit the SRT bullet.

I either do Yosemete tie off for the bowline, or (if I am climbing with a friend who hates the Yosemete) I use a double-fishermans tied to the loop to prevent the end from coming back through. mateo

    XTC and mech. ascenders?

I'm not so much worried about bounce though, all the tree climbing I have done up to this point has been SRT with a dynamic mountain climbing rope... so I am very used to wasting energy on an ascent. mateo

    XTC and mech. ascenders?

Ok! So if I got this correctly: XTC will work well with mech. ascenders (if they fit, obviously). XTC is a 16 braid non-kernmatle because the core has nothing to do with the strength of the rope, it is only to keep roundness. According to Yale's webstie, XTC Fire has an elongation rate of 0.5%...

    XTC and mech. ascenders?

So... there isn't any particular reason why they wouldn't work with XTC? I know of a number of ascenders that work up to 13mm line (1/2 in). I believe that the XTC ropes are kernmantle... if I am mistaken, I would love to know! Still no responce on the XTCs arborist knot abilities though...

    XTC and mech. ascenders?

I did a quick search on the forum, and didn't find anything here about this... so it's a simple question, how do the XTC ropes work with mech. ascenders? It says they keep their round shape, so that's a plus. Also, how are they with knotting? Are they nice and supple or stiff? If you like it...

I finally bit the SRT bullet.

Tom, Nice diagrams I do see what you are saying, it doesn't seem like it would be too bad to work out. What about trees over 70ft though? Because you're suppose to have 3xTreeHeight. I suppose you could make someone come get you if you run into trouble What about the running bowline I...
