How to Get Power from a Pulley

So, here's a question that I thought that I knew the answer to and found out that I was completely off base: How does a block-and-tackle provide mechanical advantage? That is, what mechanism is at work, such that you can pull on a rope with a certain amount of force at one end, and move a...

    LEGENDS

Some of you may have missed the November TCI Magazine Legends issue, or maybe there's a thread someplace on the Buzz? Our very own Mark Chisholm was one of the people featured in the mag. Now Mark is much too humble to make a big deal out mentioning it here, but to me it is a big deal. He has...

    GRCS Winch

I had one of the original GRCS models from many years ago and the winch always jump wraps whenever I had more than 1 turn on it and locked up on us, whenever we tried to let pieces run. Does this happen with the newer models? What Harkin winch does the newer models use?

    Bend-and-Swing-Rigging

Here's an article from one of my rigging jobs from a few summers ago, that deals with lifting and swinging trees. Some interesting tips on utilizing the wood fibers in the tree to your advantage. https://tcimag.tcia.org/tree-care/bend-and-swing-rigging/

    Rope Bridges?

On my TreeFlex saddles (which are no longer made), I have always run webbing for bridges, but am thinking of switching over to a rope bridge. What recommendations do you guys have? I know Monkey Beaver runs Arbormaster 16 strand solid braid, I used to climb on that stuff about 20 years ago.

Ed Hobbs - Passing of a Legend

I was really saddened to hear from Don Blair this morning about the passing of Ed Hobbs. As most of you know (or should know), we have Ed to thank for bringing us the modern lowering devices and arborist blocks. He brought us the Hobbs Lowering Device, Hobbs Blocks, Bry-Dan harness, etc. His...

    Standing Pieces Up

So I have a question for you guys. When rigging pieces out and you have a chance to stand the piece up, do you do it, or try to rig it horizontal and balanced? I have down it both ways and really don't have a preference. Some people think that it can be tricky to stand a piece up, but I have...

    Tree Squeeze

Saw this from Mark's posting yesterday. Couldn't you just do the same thing using a regular AFS (Adjustable Friction Saver)?

Norm Hall - TCIA Rigging Article

    It was so nice to see Norm Hall have an article in TCI mag last month. Norm has been an inspiration to me over the years with many great rigging ideas. Thanks Norm! http://tcimag.tcia.org/publication/?i=547743#{"issue_id":547743,"view":"articleBrowser","article_id":"3254295"}

    Petzl Chicane

Though it is an obvious rip-off of Bing's RW, what do you guys think of the Chicane? I've been using my version of the Rope-Zag (RW and Zig-Zag) for 2 years (as have others) with zero issues. In fact, its the best SRT system that I've used so far...and yes that includes my Akimbo. BUT that's...

    No More TreeFlex Saddle?

I personally think the best SRT harness/saddle ever made was Paolo's TreeFlex. Unfortunately, it never caught on with many climbers. I have 2 of them, though one of them is almost worn out. It seems that the company in the UK, that had the rights to make them is no longer doing so. Does anyone...

    Tree Flex saddle??

It looks like the TreeFlex saddle/harness is no longer being made in the UK or anywhere else from what I can see. Safety Technology were the ones making them, but they don't have any now. http://www.safetytechnology.co.uk/product-category/harnesses/ I own 2 TF saddles and need to replace the...

    New Crane Slings

New Crane Slings I've been using these new "Multi-Point Slings" (mistakenly referred to by some as "spider-legs") from WesSpur for the last few weeks and all I can say is they are incredible. They have a knotted WLL of 7,056 lbs! They are made from Quantum X Dyneema/Polyester are tied and untied...

    Peavey used as a Lever

OK, for all you closet engineers out there, here’s a question for you; is a Peavey tool considered a First-class, Second-class, or Third-class lever and can you prove it by showing a load diagram? As some of you may know, the Lever (of which there are 3 classes) is one of six simple machines...
