Interesting. From the video, I'm curious why you pulled from a "wide" angle? It looks like the angle of the line hooked to your come along was about 90 degrees or so. At that angle (or wider) you start to put a lot more force on the pulling line than on the sling/stump you were pulling. When I...
I have a couple of sewing needles that have fairly blunt tips that I use to bury the tail when I splice eyes in my throw lines. They make doing a longer bury pretty easy. I also cross stitch the buried section.
I made a couple of mini ultra slings yesterday using 3/16 inch Amsteel. They'll probably get used for adjusting the amount of slack in the jack lines on a sailboat. I would love to get some comments on how secure triple brummels are in Amsteel. The strength of the Amsteel is overkill for this...
I've been bringing both ends together, tying a square knot, and then trying to bury the ends and knot. The knot usually doesn't bury very well. I think it's because the two ends don't come out of exactly the same spot. Maybe if I'm more finicky about that I can get the knot to disappear. When...
I've been making soft shackles lately. I'm pretty happy with the design. I put a pull string in the core side of the noose, and leave short tails on the diamond knot. I whip lock the tails together to function as a pull tab to pull the knot through the noose instead of pushing the knot. It...
I spliced up a dog leash using some blue Tenex-TEC, and every time I use it my hands turn Smurf-blue. Is there a way to set the color or wash out the color?
When this happens, does it create a weak spot in the trunk? A friend has something similar in a maple, and I don't know if/what anything needs to be done. The tree is large and near his house.
I've had trouble using dogs on an underpowered homeowner saw. I now use beefier saws, and can't imagine using them without dogs. As Tom said above, it helps dampen the vibration. I also seem to hold the saw steadier which makes the saw cut faster/more efficiently.
The other day I was messing around creating a dog leash, where two dogs could be leashed together, with one handle. No real splicing, but some braiding, knotting, and round stitching. I did a locking brummel to attach each clip, then added a piece of paracord to create three strands. I did this...
If you just ran one end through the line, and then tapered/buried the two ends, that won't be very strong. If you ran both ends through each other, it's easy to make a mistake. It's also easy to check and see if you made a mistake. Before burying the tails, just pull in opposite directions on...
I had the folks at Arbsession break test a sample of what I'm doing. It was a continuous 8" loop of 7/64" Amsteel. It broke at 1742 pounds, which is above the ABS of a single strand. Since that's way above my requirements for the application, I'm a happy camper.
