    Chipped vines- returning to life?

Although Kudzu is not, touch wood, in my realm, I’ve had a close to to Tarzan like (minus the yodeling and swinging) battle with vines most of my life and would say once cut off vine “uppers” are fairly inert. It’s the portion of the vine on or under the ground that’s Hydra like.

    Treestuff bogus product ratings

Not to mitigate on Treestuff’s behalf but they never publish my reviews regardless of their content or rating. This makes me think they really know what they are doing. ;)

Question MRS DdRT vs. SRS SRT

Sure Richard - To me SRS is the perfect system, EXCEPT for all the #%*”&# fiddling with the tending: hook it up to climb; don’t forget to unhook it when you stop climbing; get it adjusted short as possible, for the least sit back, and you have to contort your self like a shrimp to get it...

Question MRS DdRT vs. SRS SRT

Tending - MRS is “self tending” but SRS requires an extra harness and/or anchor point which must typically must be attached when ascending and detached otherwise.

    Harp tree

About 20 years ago I made a didgeridoo out of a nice straight punky cored hawthorn that was about 2.5” x 60”. We bandsawed it in half lengthwise, scraped out the mushy core, and epoxied back together. It’s still making beautiful music but needs accompaniment from your creation @cerviarborist.:)

    Employment application test

Seriously, you’re on the right track here Tom. One of the most reassuring aspects of my work as a trade school teacher was the prescribed method of evaluation in the provincial system in which I worked, that required that all evaluations be practical and individual. Thus an exam in roofing for...

    Employment application test

Thanks Tom - now I get the picture.

    Employment application test

Am I doing it all wrong? I typically tie the bowline (in 1/2” rope) with a 4” tail. When I Google the length of gerbil’s tails they say they average 4”. Though retired I’d like to think I’m still employable.

    Field Anchor

Yes thank you Tom - I neglected to give you the credit you are due for your previous posting of these “military secrets” which provided me with the inspiration to carry on - in my own backwoods way.

    Field Anchor

After a winter of success with a field anchor I thought I’d pass on my experience for those of you who haven’t yet tried this rudimentary but effective device that can make tree pulling less stressful. As previously noted I operate a “Mickey Mouse” operation which consists of me (and the...

    Breaking dead ash limbs

I have hundreds of ash trees. The majority are looking ill (we also have ash yellows). Many look healthy. Some are obviously dying. As I mentioned in a previous post the forestry engineer supervising my bush has directed me to fell them all. I’m now convinced that not only is he right, but...

    Breaking dead ash limbs

Just to amplify - neither of these trees was dead.

    Breaking dead ash limbs

Today while felling two little (9”DBH x 65’) ash trees their variability of state was clearly illustrated. The two trees looked like “two peas in a pod” and were about 4’ apart. They were skinny vertical ash trees - very typical of an ash that has grown amongst other trees. They both appeared...

    Tough to untie

The idea is to use a portawrap to join 2 ropes so that after heavy loading it’s easy to get them untied - certainly effective. I’d say using a knot like like the circus bowline aka farmers knot and a carabiner gets you there more handily.

    Tough to untie

You’re right about the system - it’s me that finds the five pounds heavy. Also, call me Nervous Nellie but I don’t like gazing down a line when I’m cranking over a thousand pounds of force on stretchy rope looking at a decent sized chunk of steel aimed at me, if I don’t have to.

    Tough to untie

Yes - superb - as @flushcut said “use a porty”, but they’re heavy. :) To date I’ve never had a “good” knot jam so hard that beating it (within an inch of it’s life) against a nice solid chunk of wood (which, for some reason, I always seem to find handy) doesn’t loosen it easily.

    Tough to untie

I use the circus bowline everyday, in fact every time I need a midline knot with only one loop. It never jams even when heavily loaded - that’s why it’s my go to knot. I’d even give it my highest knot functionality rating - double mitt - that’s to say it can be tied and untied with both my...

Anyone using the Camp Access harnesses?

I do, and so far I’ve only climbed with my top handled saw, but I’m used to wearing some kind of suspender - chest harness as I’ve done so since I really got started climbing. I do carry a fair amount of weight on my harness - a hand ascender, an extra descender, several carabiners, a 20’...

Anyone using the Camp Access harnesses?

Last Black Friday sales I picked up a Camp Tree Access ANSI ST Harness, and a Camp Tree Access SRT Chest Harness from TreeStuff for $328.29. This is my first harness with a rope bridge and lower “D” attachment points (I was climbing on a New Tribe Work harness previously) so I cannot compare it...

    Dragon Fly Hitch

Wish I could give you the helpful hitch answer, but though I am exclusively climbing on Fly type rope (Fly lanyard, Dragonfly hook line, and Firefly main climbing line) I don’t use any hitches. The TAZ Lov is my ascender-descender, the CT Sparrow is my lanyard adjuster, and the Art Positioner 2...
