A few years back, @Brocky sent me a couple of his versions of this... I promptly made about a dozen variants, myself, because they just work so well and weigh next to nothing. I think this one, still in use on a short lanyard, is one of the Brocky originals.
Natural selection has done a good job with bee behavior. That loud, aggresive behavior does a good job of discouraging most animals from stealing the honey stash. It is reinforced by the less obvious benefit to the bees themselves... a bee that successfully scares off a raccoon doesn't get eaten...
Yeah, that's actually my favorite thing about them. From season to season, no more retuning the saw all the time. In Nebraska, the weather changes every time a cow belches or a pig farts.
I would add that I use a small piece of 3/8" air compressor hose on the pin of the shackle... shove it through the eye of the rope then assemble the shackle to the rope, passing the pin through the piece of hose. The length of the piece of hose is the inside width of the shackle between the pin...
