Nice tidy job. What was the purpose of the work? It may sound stupid but do they simply want to encourage errosion of the banks through the destruction of the root structures binding it together?
The felling cetificates in the UK are supposed to be forestry based. Currently this is variable however dependant on training provider and there particular route into the training aspect of the industry. The majority of which seem to come from the arb side.
I do agree with mr ed's opinion. The...
if you think trying to understand the game of cricket is hard work you should try understanding base ball!
Cricket is a game played between two teams, generally of 11 members each. In essence, it is single combat, in which an individual batsman does battle against an individual bowler, who has...
sycamores are my staple diet. Yes they are strong in many respects and make fantastic flooring, but you can easily rip a inch + branch off at this time of year, and i have stopped pulling moderate back leaning trees over cos they will not stay on the stump long enough.
just re read the post. I think that a dynamic type of rope would be most suitable but on that size of tree i think that something more substantial may be required!
If i had to guy the tree i would be tempted to use a couple of climbing lines. I have used them in the past as the elastic nature of them helps the tree give a little so more movement in the wind and not be held as fast as with a standard rigging rope.
As for the spus i can see how with the tree...
I prefer the short gaffs, however the 2nd climber in my team prefers the long ones. I asked the groundie about it today and he said that we have diferent styles of movement. He noticed that i prefer to stand on branches and in forks where as andrew will clean everything away from his feet and...
You may laugh but protective sleeves( cover up to the elbow) and jackets (cover arms and shoulders) are available in uk and europe. IMO The jackets are practically impossible to work in as they are too restrictive and hot, but the sleeves are gaining in favour amoungst some parts of the climbing...
In the uk it is rare to see anyone working with a saw without a pair. It always seems strange looking at all the clips etc of you guys wearing jeans! I would feel naked without saw protection.
Glad to hear that u have done no permenant damage and i hope u heal soon. I am in a similar position...
top pictures steve.
sure somone could use the argument that "a" spike wound will heal, but mow many wounds does a tree have to sustain before the amount of damage becomes unacceptable?
If an suplimentary tie in point is available i would be hard put to think of a reason why it should not used. Dead and damaged tree carry an enhanced risk so a climber needs to respond to that and reduce it !
close one! digressing a little, when workin on the roads 15 years ago remember my mate puttin the pekker through a 12in water pipe. not funny u may say but when he put his foot on it to try and stop the leak had to laugh as the water pressure catapulted him out of the hole which was 5ft deep!
