    That little blue Estwing is called the “Fireside Friend”. It’s useful to have on hand, but not the best wedge driver as the head is rounded and has no grip. It shines with stump cuts as it chops the dirty bark off easily and taps wedges for the final cut.

    I don’t have any more Hemlock seed, but I still have a few seedlings that made it through the Summer and somehow managed to avoid getting eaten by the slugs. Hopefully they will push out new growth in the spring. Right now they are still tiny.

    My guess is that they thought that because the jack wasn’t pushing the tree in the right direction, they needed to cut more of the hinge until oops!

    I already have a Pecan off to the left side of my house in that picture. Plus I’ve heard that it’s best not to plant the same species in another tree’s former location. Nematodes and a depletion of specific nutrients, not to mention species specific diseases.

    How about just probe where you need to. Think about how much better it would have been if this company had probed for a tank where they intended to drive/park their rig. Most tanks are within fifteen feet of the house, although I have seen some crazy exceptions.

    I worked a job where a plumber purchased a foreclosure. He was in the process of installing a new septic system because a toilet kept backing up, even though he thought he had found the tank. Turned out there were four separate tanks and who knows how many systems!
