    It's going to depend on the weight of the load. If there is a light load, one might be able to get by with 3 wraps. The heavier the load, the more wraps required. The last cleat hitch should be on the top post. Sometimes only one cleat is needed, again depending on the load.

    .041 is a good all around size. I use on 7/16" to 3/4" arborist rope.

    Yeah, I only used up to 5/8" ropes on the aluminum. The steel powder coated gets the 3/4" DB ropes. Like said in a previous post, the aluminum doesn't get used at all anymore. Use the steel powder coat for everythng now. I know I'm the minority, but I still really like using 1/2" 3 strand...

    Mostly 1/2" (13mm) 3 strand. But some 9/16's and 5/8" double braid too. I would say about 60% 3 strand and the rest DB.

    Regarding splicing, I was always told that the angle at the crotch of the splice should be a minimum of 30 degrees.

    Here's the image of the two Porty 3's side by side, 1 aluminum and 1 Powder coated, both large. I only use the aluminum version as a demo to anchor it to a tree. Not for actual lowering.

    I have an aluminum large Portry 3 and a very well used large steel powdercoat. I'll place them next to each other and attach the image to show the wear in the aluminum tomorrow.

    I too, started in 1969, 3 days after my 16th birthday in April, workng Saturdays. Worked most Saturdays until summer break. Started working the summers of 1969 and 1970, between High School grades. No throw lines, no shot pouches (johnny balls), just climbing a 40' ladder and free climbing...

    McCulloch 10-10S

    Had one Mac 10-10 back in the day. We had an 18" bar on it. If I remember correctly, that saw was fairly well balanced with an 18" bar. No anti-vibe, manual oiler, built with all cast magnesium. Heavy, but very dependable and very few breakdowns. Also had four Mac 7-10's. That saw was a rocker.
