I was curious what some arborists might think was happening here based solely on the video. I myself guessed it was just steam from compost. I was not aware of the potential for underground lines to start fires but seem obvious now!

I do think it was a bit crazy for the fd to just cut a whole in it. @Steve Connally wwyd?

I see a seam like a ‘frost crack’. The decay can smolder for years. Now the ignition source is the big puzzle, that and how to put it out by getting water to it!
