Chainsaw Shopping

If there's a thread (modern, like last couple years) on this please let me know.

We're located in the upper Midwest as well.

Shopping for saws and getting out budget planned for the year. Those of you who know me have heard of my spine issues which can limit my productivity a fair bit.

Yesterday was one of those days. Had to remove some large trees and used my 3120 with a 36" bar more than I should have. In pretty bad shape today.

So I'm making plans as we're expanding to get good saws to make our lives easier.

I'm not a saw nerd despite having ran them professionally and daily for coming up on two decades. I've never been interested in saws outside of "they do the job".

I'm trying to get more power to weight ratio so I can continue to handle bigger jobs myself AND to make my crew happier as we grow.

The 3120 is a beast and will run a 6' bar if needed, but it weighs as much as a toddler and I can't hardly use it for more than a few minutes. The first saw I'm needing is something that'll run a 32"+ bar quickly without breaking 25lbs.

Also, I'd gotten my old 193t stolen a few weeks ago (16" bar, loved it). I picked up a 194 (14" bar), and it is a dog. Slow, hates the cold. Could need tinkering. But I'm debating sending it to a performance shop as we're getting into a higher productivity level as a crew and I don't want saws to be our pinch point. Not interested in electric, too cold for that and I just don't like them much. Tried, not happy.

From here, I've got a 261 that I am really happy with. It pulls wood well and is light enough I can run it a majority of the day without wanting to cry. We also have an echo 490 that is decent for smaller wood and limbing as a ground saw.

I'd like my saws to increase in bar length and specificity, starting with the 194 running a 16" bar, moving up to a 20", then 28, 36, etc. no fucking about with changing bars out and easier to keep track of/more profitable for my workers and me.

That said, I know fuck all about saws other than maintenance. I don't have a local performance saw shop, but am interested in ratting out saws to getting better p2w ratios if they still can have a decent life span.

So, here we are. Long winded post for a simple problem that would take me a shit load of research to figure out. Tap into folks who are better than me to shore up deficiencies. Lol.

Thanks for any advice!!!

How often do you need 32"?

Can you double-cut with a smaller saw at times to relieve the strain?

Long bars are important at times.
Sometimes, double-cutting for a felling cut is easier than very long bars on big powerheads.

I stump with a half-wrap 261/ 20", keeping the bar-nose buried in the middle of the tree. Keeps from pulling dirt into the kerf. I've got a 42" for my ms661.

I use 32" pretty often tbh. Used it about a dozen times since the new year already. Our average tree removal size keeps increasing.

I used the 261 where I can for stumping, but like yesterday it wouldn't go near halfway through the tree.

I've had saws "built" before but don't care to do so on an ongoing basis.

Stihl's 500i is apretty incredible saw for power to weight, easy start, pulling a bigger bar.
I'm really eyeing a 500i. I keep seeing folks have premature failure with them, so I was debating upgrading filters. We're moving to red armor mix for the race reviews it gets from saw nerds, maybe that would help in the longevity side of things?

A 28" 500i would fill a lot of holes in my arsenal.

My 572XP runs a 36" skip chain all day, 3/8, 058. Modded it would be even better, obviously. Used to run my 36" on a 395 XP , but that saw is in rough shape these past couple years, so I started just throwing it on the 572 and have been very happy with it. I also keep a 575XP and a 461 with 28" bars on the truck.

Lot of love for the 572 here, better than the 576.

I second the 500i. It’s very comfortable with a 28, and pulls a 32 without struggling.
It is really hard to argue against that P2W ratio too. That saw is borderline magical. That will likely be the next saw I buy when I can justify it, though I wanna get my smaller saws modded up first.

Are you modding AND able to see your way clear to leave screens in muffler?

Not doing that seems like a good way to suicide by mob violence to me given the big fires CA has experienced.
I haven't gotten that far yet. I just got a gig with a big regional outfit, so as soon as I have some money to spend on it, I will be investigating options.

I guess it depends on what flavor of saw you prefer. As far as light toppers go I believe a lot of people are gravitating towards modded Echo 2511.

I personally use all husqvarna. Top handle is the T540xp Mk3 (which absolutely isn't light) with the west coast saws muffler and dogs and its amazing for take downs. From there I go 562xp Mk2 with a 20", after that I have a 372xp with a muffler mod with a 24" bar and chain (which would absolutely handle a 28), Big stuff I have a 395xp with a 28" that cuts most things and rips and swap a 36" on it if need be.

I intend to purchase a 572xp and 592xp this year, just waiting until husky runs a sale.

Based off of what it sounds like your needs are id consider:

Stihl 150
201 and or t541i
261
500i
395

I am on my second 150 and have played around with mods. This one is on its last legs but it’s a great light saw!
201 kinda really sucks but seems like it’s the best for the class
I’m really digging the battery husky with a clutch. I dislike the previous one
261 is just a damn good reliable saw and very capable within its class
There is no comparison for the 500i its a different saw in a class of its own. Part of the airfilter perception is that the seal is the circle and not the oval smooshed like all other saws stihl makes in that range. Mines bone stock and I really don’t have any complaints. The 28” lives on it.
Next up I have a 461 which doesn’t get much use but a 32” lives on that.
395 is a legend and if I had a 3120 it would collect dust unless absolutely needed

T542i w/ 14"
Ported 550xp w/18"
572xp w/24"
592xp w/ 36"

That's my current setup. Unlike a lot of guys I wasn't a fan of the 562xp. It just didn't fit in anywhere for me. A ported 550 will get closer to the 562 in power while being significantly lighter and more nimble. Great for in tree cutting. And then by the time I'm ready to swap out my 550 I might as well make a 20cc jump instead of the 10cc. So I grab my 572. Same logic with going from the 572xp to 592xp.

The 550 and 572 stay on the truck at all times and I carry a 28" bar and chain that I can swap onto the 572 if a situation comes up where I feel I need the extra bit. The 592 rarely leaves my basement. I had it out less than 10 times last year.

People preach the 395xp and rightfully so, but having upgraded to the 592xp I feel it's a better package.

This arsenal does not play. Horses for coarses.
535i XP 12", MSA 220T 14", 2 modded 201TCs 14", ported 261 20" 3/8 .050 light bar. MS 462 stock 25" light bar 3/8 .050, muffler modded MS 661 28" light bar 3/8 .050. Also decks its own 36" bar reg weight. Then we have a ported 372XP 25" reg weight bar 3/8 .050. Can run a 28" light weight with ease. My crazy horse is a 395XP with a 28" lightweight bar 3/8 .063. Has a 36" reg bar 3/8 .050 which it cranks. It will run the 42" 3/8 .063 skip chain easily. But the 3120xp holds that bar with full comp 3/8 .063. Nothing needed with these crazy cats. All reliable.
