Undercutting hung up trees

Sometimes i mite do that, faced upwards or up to rollout side;
from higher leverage pull on load.
Then a brace to the pulley support tree, higher up, in opposing direction;
if can flex forward, might brace similarly to craft face, then remove brace.
Very many variables, each shituation different.

I have a couple smaller hung up trees, around 8 inch dead elm, I will tackle this week in a rocky brook area with steep banks. I told the customer that I'd have some environmental concerns as a little bar and chain oil will spray around, unavoidable, unless you took extraordinary measures.

Nearly 40 years ago when I was hiking the Long Trail in Vermont with my dog, I wandered into a logging camp where a couple guys were girdling trees for the forest service. They put a chain saw in my hands, with zero training and had me have at it. Some trees were girdled, others cut and got hung up. Lucky I didn't get hurt plus after I'd had enough after a day or two they asked me how much I wanted and didn't pay much.

$30 bucks and get some bio oil. Or just run to the grocery store and by a jug of canola. Or 8” just use a handsaw

Here’s one hung up at about 60ft with another 30ft entangled. The base is 24-30 inches. The owner wants it pieced out with minimal collateral damage. The other tree is100ft+ and 4-5ft, big tree. I’m getting worn out just looking at the job.

I got this particular job of a couple 12 inch or so hung up trees down and cut up today, a birch and an elm, no real spring in them which you have to watch out for. I first undermined the birch with a couple cuts so that it would come down when the elm went down. I tried to take a picture but the camera battery was dying. It turned out that doing it this way was probably best as when I cut the dead elm the birch went down with it; some concern about it coming toward me which it didn't. All of this was over an active brook with lots of rocks so had to cut and maneuver the cut trees walking through the brook with lots of water, Gore-Tex boots don't really help you much when water gets in them. Plan was to cut up wood get the logs out of the brook and then come back and do the hauling. I do a lot of hiking, many weeks over 20 miles, so tough terrain is not an insurmountable hurdle. Customer said he could "get a couple of guys" no doubt illegals, Jos-A and Jose-B, I told him I'll do the labor and hauling then split the wood.

Only works on small enough trees, but here is one way to make a sketchy cut from a safe distance.... and a cut the Husky battery pole doesn't have the power to make, but the Milwaukee does, so I carry both at all times.

The fellow from the first post where we undercut a hung up tree that stayed hung up said that it finally came down in the winter winds, probably a couple years later.

If it stays hung up swing it out, and back and forth, either by hand, or with a piece of rope. Try going around the back as it goes to the side to leverage it out.

This popped up on YouTube and I thought it was relevant to our conversation on the slice cut. Go to the 17:00 mark for the fun to begin. A perfect situation for a tip tie, pretensioned rigging line, and a well executed slice cut ( just make sure and clear any larger limbs off the backside so they don’t kick your ass on the way by).

This fella really fucked the pooch here!

When in doubt, go smaller. Mentioned he was unsure a couple times and just kept with the original plan. Slice cut would have been better too
Yea. I am always amazed when I watch guys put a top into a location that it won’t fit in. Do they not understand that the end result can many times be a top sitting in your lap?

Hardly relevant... you just couldn't help yourself cause someone needs to call this guy out...

I volunteer..

57K subscribers to watch him fumble and fk around... mistake after mistake... he's clueless.. And just like the rest of us, he probably thinks he's good.. or even great..
