Anyone near Grass Valley, CA need a solid new guy?

One of my oldest friends in the world, who also taught me loads about soil, is looking to switch tracks in his career and move out from horticulture into tree work. He has a degree from Humboldt State, now Cal-Poly Humboldt, with a specialization in soil science, and he has been managing trees on his 20 acres in Brownsville for 12 years or so, and knows the ins and outs of chainsaws; managing tension and compression, not getting the bar pinched when bucking. He's used to long hard hours outside all year, and is smart as they come. He understands that it's usually a start at the bottom and prove yourself kind of business. If anyone has any leads, I'm trying to plug my guy in with a good crew. He has a resume ready to send out.

When you posted the other day about working Oroville I almost commented about my fond memories of living and working a year up in Feather Falls.

I cut burnt timber there a few summers ago. Stayed in oroville and drove through what was left of feather falls to get to the job. That was a horrible fire, I could stand on any ridge out there and look in any direction and there was not a speck of green as far as the eye could see.

Wow, sad to think of. Did you ever do the hike down to the falls? On a freezing day the mist turns similar snow during the long drop, very beautiful.

No, I never saw the falls, and only foundations where the houses were. Most of the trees around the community of feather falls had already been cut when I got there, it was a moonscape. I saw some pictures online of what it used to look like, very pretty place. Hard to imagine that when looking at the aftermath.

Interesting point, I was told that Feather Falls used to get 9 feet of snow. When Oroville Dam went in and filled up it would hardly get 1 foot and that would melt off pretty quick.

That makes so much sense! The lake makes a bubble of more moderated temperatures, so in the summer, it's almost 10⁰ cooler next to the lake than the surrounding area, but in the winter, it stays more than 10⁰ warmer than the cold spots nearby. That was one of the reasons that I wanted to live right next to it. It's one of the nicest places in the central valley, especially if you wanna have a nursery/farm.
