Chip boxes made out of wood? Waterproofing them?

Alot of us on here has had a wood box before and the biggest issue is getting it wet and it rotting out. I want to know what other do about this as i live in the PNW and it rains all the time. I put on a tarp when it sits when im not using it or in the winter. I want to know what others use when they leave there trucks out all the time expose to the elements! Metal roofing sheets? Liquid rubber rolled on? exterior paint the box? heavy duty tarp? rubber sheets? extra wood? what do you use and what can you share to others to educate others who are in the same spot as i am. I hate setting up that tarp every time i come home.

I’ve had good luck with good quality exterior paint; I used Behr Barn and Fence paint from Home Depot for years with good success. Put on at least two, probably three, coats and make sure the edges are especially well sealed, and you should not have a problem. Marine grade plywood will help too, or properly dried pressure treated, but personally I think marine grade is better if you’re painting it.

RV roofs are sealed with butyl tape.

Paint the wood and edges with a couple oc coats of good paint before assembly. Then another coat after assembly. Cover seams with butyl tape.

Or...

Look at all the time you're spending and the weight of plywood...and price out sheetmetal. Do it once might be cheaper.

I built a removable box for my truck out of plywood, and coated it with primer and exterior paint. I forget the brand of paint/primer, but I bought the better quality stuff that was available. My truck is stored outside and so is the box when disassembled, so far no rot or waterlogging.

Not a chipper box but I have some plywood bed extensions for the ladder rack on my pickup and used 3 layers of quality exterior paint and its working well 4 yrs later.

If you don't mind spending a fortune use RedGaurd to paint. Its a waterproofing liquid membrane for showers but is about 60 a gallon and goes on thick about 30 sq feet a gallon. I am not that rich ;-)

Use exterior stain vs paint. There are good options at most box stores for 5gal pails (cabot, olympic, behr, superdeck). Or go to paint stores and ask for stain returns, I stained the plywood for mini-mats with $10 gals from sherwin williams....

we use pressure treated 2"by x" in lumber for sides with 1/2" treated lumber liner and roof 2x6 joists on 24" center

is that a 16 foot sure trac dump? Im planning on buying one this week. Do you recommend it?
yes and no...i really like the trailer i got 16k axle upgrade and telescopic hoist and its stupid strong...but i wish it had a hydraulic jack. the problem is the pump is single acting because its gravity down and there isnt any way to suck the jack back up. so sure trac has a sister company called h&h trailers and they make basically the same trailer with a scissor hoist and hydraulic jack. i just dont think the hoist would be quite as strong.

heres a picture of my f550 loaded to 43k gcvw with 9ton on that trailer. handled it and dumped it no problem.
also a pic of that other trailer

If you’re looking for a dump trailer that will handle whatever you put in it, check out Belmont trailers out in this area. They build them incredibly strong, hydraulic jack, dual ram powered up and down hoist, and they’ll add extra frame crossmembers if you wish to make the floor stronger for hauling logs or heavy machines. We recently designed one for order this Spring.

@Reach, I think I've seen you talking about road salt and rust. Can you get that hot dip galvanized? I had a trailer done by Midsota that when speced right is phenomenally strong and had it hot dipped for $200 per foot. (I had noticed the ocean going boat trailers near me that were 20 years old and only bare bolts etc. had rust on them.)

If I were going to plank a chip box I'd be inclined to get some white or burr oak slabbed. It wouldn't have to be 8/4. I kinda think 5/4 would be plenty.

We're all connected well enough to buddies. Put the word out that you are looking for a sawlog. It doesn't have to be Select, in fact some knots or distress would look great on a tree truck box.

Using lumber that doesn't rot saves using preservatives. Less environmental damage and all.

Yes, we have plenty of salt and rust here in PA, so I’m sure I’ve mentioned it.

I do not know if Belmont would hot dip a trailer before they painted it, but it’s probably worth asking them if they would - they do offer a couple galvanized utility trailers, so I’m guessing there’s a good chance they could do a custom galvanizing for you.

We have one Belmont deckover trailer that’s going on 8-10 years old and has no notable rust, the only places it has any at all is where the chains get dragged across the deck or the tie down rails. Otherwise, it’s still pretty and black, cleans up real nice when we wash it still too.

Edit: I found a copy of their catalog on our dealer’s website, in case you’re interested in their offerings. They do offer Hot Dip Galvanizing as an option on their dump trailers, so you’re in luck! https://www.pinehilltrailers.com/data/uploads/contentblock/Pine Hill_2020 Belmont Catalog.pdf
