Just finished a climbing course over the weekend

Jorgon,

You keep mentioning all these people who have the same experience as another person. This is sooo impossible. Everyone has their own experience and aptitude. You gain prowess doing different things over time.

Knocking over largely green plantation timber is way different than forest work.

Climbing rotted nasties without shitting a brick is different than rigging a spreading tree over a house.

Orchard pruning and ornamental pruning are very different that pruning a conifer for deadwood, and canopy-raises or building clearance.

Most tree guys have never seen a Port-a-Wrap, much less a Hobbs, GRCS, tree jacks...ahhh, actually wedges used properly, functional hinges...

I"m not discounting the trainers experience. NiceGuyDave was the trigger man for a nice shot through a gate that is in the Rotator. He's banged over countless trees, rigged out countless trees. I don't know who else is in there, but likely solid, experienced trainers.

There are so many things that trainers will not show you because they are not basic, but useful in the real world. They will show you good fundamentals. Well worth it. They just scratched the surface.

Trainers train on Best Practices, and defensible instruction.

They probably offer a lot of things on par with a Driver's Ed class and in-car driving training. That is great. You absolutely should look for professional instruction, since you're new working-at-height/ living-at-height., since you don't have a mentor.

I heard a comedian joking that they need to teach you get get a dropped, lit cigarette out of your lap, going 80 down the road with the top down. That's the difference between rec climbing and being a production tree-wrecker.

Driving city streets is a lot different than Daytona.

You have to start with the basics.

Remember, the driver's at Daytona all make going 200 MPH (or whatever) easy. I figure I can turn left 4 times in a 1/2 mile, or whatever. Not that hard. I'm just going to make bank doing it.

How often do I do the same cutting on the ground as in the tree? Almost never.

You would benefit a LOT by going to a climbing gym. A LOT.

There is so much that I' don't ever register doing in a day of tree work. Barely think about a lot of it. Everything takes practice.

Sean that was a mouthful but spot on and eloquently delivered. Hopefully dude will see the light. Not sure anymore. He seems to have fallen asleep again. So easy to do after a hard training class.

Thanks @southsoundtree. I really appreciate the advice and honestly this is the type of stuff I was looking for when joining treebuzz.

@swingdude like you said he put it very eloquently. Very different than making comments such as "he seems to have fallen asleep again" or "you're a fool", etc.

I get the feeling that alot of you either haven't developed people skills or you just don't give a fuck. I think it's the latter as many of you seem pretty smart and know what you're talking about.

People are always going to be more receptive to advice when the person giving the advice is not being condescending or offensive, it's human nature.

I have worked in some aggressive worksites where you have to watch your back and if you are focussing on some insult or grievance in the past, you won’t be watching where the hit will be coming from. Courage is strength, defensiveness is weakness, and some wolves will pick you out of a herd...Some people will disrespect you - are you going to take them all on?

I am telling you this so you can have a look in the mirror, become humble (the true definition of humble - not what most consider it to be) and make progress in this life which is a lot shorter than most realise, and make every moment count...

Rico and others here may bite a little, but you may not have realised the line you stepped over. I would apologise and reappraise situation.

I generally don’t preach on here unless the situation calls for it, and other youthfuls on Internet will be watching so maybe they can learn a thing or too as well. So the conversation is not wasted.

Stay safe, and prosper....

Thanks man. The good thing about a forum is that we can all share different perspectives. I have also worked at aggressive work sites and I have noticed that leadership like that is not effective. Working at aggressive worksites is not good for employee morale and that is not what I want in my company.

Maybe it's my upbringing but to me it's always been about respect. I will give you the same respect that you give me, I don't care how talented or skilled you are.

I would never talk to my employees or newbies like some people do in here and if that's the way most people in the industry are then I see this as an opportunity to change this.

I may come off as arrogant but it's more about me feeling that if someone can do it I can too. It's just a matter of me working my ass off, learning, and prospering like you said.

I get your perspective though

After reading your last 2 posts I have an observation and 2 questions.

1. Your continuing to attack the messengers here with nonsense like "you either haven't developed people skills", "or you just don't give a fuck". So the circle jerk goes round, and round, and round?

2. You have used words like respect, arrogance, and humble when referring to yourself, yet I am having a difficult time figuring out why you should receive much, if any respect here. God knows we tree guys can get a little prideful and arrogant concerning the work we do, but what exactly do you have to be arrogant or humble about when it come to the subject matter at hand?

3. Your age, and your education?

No offense but that's not the definition of arrogance. Arrogance is feeling superior to you. I don't.

I hope to one day reach the knowledge you have but if I ever do, I hope to never display any arrogance for being that knowledgeable.

Young- having lived or existed for only a short time.

Arrogant- having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities.

Fool- a person who acts unwisely or imprudently; a silly person.

Well all I can say @Jorgon1022 is I kind of got worn down with your BS. You seem to want pampering. I am not that type. I am 52 just lost a major part of my dominant hand pinky and am nursing a partial torn tendon in my left hand doing close grip pull ups. Still have to tree everyday to feed my family. I was climbing 3 days after my partial pinky amputation. Hell I am not here to play hop scotch with you. I will leave that to those that are less of an asshole than I. You want to be told what you want to hear. I am not that person. Here I am doing my daily grind with two jacked up injuries. I am healing but that is what treefolk are we just get on with it. It is the arb way dude.

Much respect to you man. Sorry about your injuries but it takes a badass to be up there after those injuries.

I hope to one day get where you are at and have the ability to bring those types of monsters down.

Was not big. Just nice milling. Sweet mahogany. Just run of the mill daily graft. No medals. Mostly unappreciated work which I love. Made a few pennies. Certainly not bank. Lol.

When I was climbing last week I was like "how the fuck is it that some companies pay climbers 18-20 an hour?"
I would atleast pay 35-40, especially now that I see how dangerous this line of work is.

I've made peace with the fact that if I pursue this career, that it's not matter of if but a matter of when I will get hurt.

Jorgon1022 you have missed doing the reflection bit that I recommended you doing. The bible says pride comes before a fall and I fear you are committed to that path.

For those that can’t handle a link to a bible based lesson please look away now...

I would suggest looking at this page as it will contain a lot more context than a dictionary will give you...

I enjoyed that. I am an asshole but a believer and trust God. Jesus delivered me from 6 years of crack and homelessness. I have been sober for over 14 years. Arrogance viles me. Today's generation seems rapped in it, respect is earned. I do not just respect someone in a few hours. I been around Treebuzz for over 8 years I came here with my tail between my legs. The info shared has been invaluable to my career. I have met many here in person and it has been a wonderful experience. It took years for me to gain the respect of my peers. All about consistancy. Humility goes a long way here. Just my 2 cents.

I liked the article.

I like where it says that the 'im better than you' attitude destroys our relationships with others because thats definitely true.

Also, whoever would be great among you must be your servant. In this situation I interpret it as if I know more than someone else, I will serve him and feed him my knowledge. Thats what I intend to do as well once I get good at this.

I have said multiple times that I realize that I know nothing, I'm a baby when it comes to trees and I realize that all of you know more about trees than I do. I must not be doing a good job at communicating this if more than half of you think im being arrogant.

At this point, I think everyone here has already formed an opinion on me and they all consider me arrogant. Unfortunately, I cant change that anymore and spending energy trying to convince people otherwise is ineffective.

This thread has been heading nowhere and the only thing that we are doing is either I am getting attacked or I am attacking and offending others (Again, not very conducive to anything).

Moving forward I will not be responding to any posts that attack my character, attitude, etc.

I will post here so that maybe others that come after me can learn from the mistakes that I make on the field and so that whoever is interested can follow my journey. But I dont have the energy to keep arguing back and forward. Im sure many of you dont either as you all have lives to live.

I apologize to everyone that I have offended in this or the first thread.

Wish you all the best and hopefully you guys will follow my journey.

In the coming weeks I will start posting videos along with lessons learned on the job. In addition to this I plan to post about the business side of things such as how much money I made, how much I spent, profited, etc. I will also be posting how I am marketing, and whether my marketing is effective/ineffective.

Thank you all.
