Hey Look at My Crud...

Can't see enough on the left-most side. Would likely agree to the other two suspects of Grifola and Inonotus, although verify that Ischnoderma is out of the running. Although highly unlikely to get a hit, I'm speaking this coming Saturday afternoon in Brunswick, ME for our state mushroom club. Tune in!

Western hemlock warts? See this occasionally in pockets. In extreme cases it’s covering nearly the whole stemB1A9CC61-DA89-4420-B36D-7B305F0D241B.webp302EA3B5-B0E3-4620-8F0C-8FB1C4D044FB.webpA463BCBA-3DA0-4D57-B8CC-8733D5E5B4EC.webp

You have acid soils with high Mn?

Perhaps just galls is the simple answer?

I do see that the tree has been repeatedly wounded over a period of years. I need a sharper look at the brown patches on the lower bole. Is that what you were referring to as fungus? This photo does tell a lot, but not enough closeup detail for me.

Just back from the Maine Mycology club lecture that I mentioned earlier in this thread. It was way fun.

I had a little piece in their newsletter, the link to which I may have already posted: https://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/57542.
I've been lately thinking of individual species of decay fungi as to where they fit along the axis between an opportunistic generalist like the common wound pathogen Trametes versicolor versus a hardcore specialist like Phellinus robineae that only attacks the durable heartwood of black locust. So I gave some examples of those basic principles of community ecology as seen with the wood decay fungi. I know, doesn't sound very exciting, but folks seemed to like it and gave good feedback.
