Congratulate me! I think that I just got a deal of the decade, or century. 16K!

Picked her this morning, sweet! 1999 (will find out if it’s a late or early 99, late 99 has the next gen configuration), F550 7.3L PSD, new 4R100 tranny a year old 4x4 high and low, 14’ box 5’ high, removable top (not saying that I’ll ever remove the top, but it’s good to have the option), 100K miles, This will be a perfect upgrade for my trusty 95 F350 dump that served me so well for the past 15 years. The mean reason for the upgrade is concerns for safety. The F350 does not have the braking power for a 6000 LB bandit 250 and a full load of chips. I’m so happy J. Going to go through all fluids, glow plugs, etc.IMG_4349.webp

thx. the green bandit 250 in the picture is my part chipper. the daily work horse is another nice looking, old 95 250.

Good score! I only have two gm 3500's. My chipper is a 1985 morbark eager beaver, no brakes but only weighs about 3500lbs, and my boxes hold 8 yards. No problems stopping, but a full load of logs or chips puts me well over gvwr. I could use a 550 with a big box. Congratulations.

Sweet deal dude !

We have an 01 that we have been running for years. It's time for injectors due to the tank liner coming apart most likely but this is the first major repair it's had. These are very good trucks as long as you use them within their limits. Great score!

Gorman, what about oil pan, check outside or inside? I’m going to change the oil today. What’s the likely issue with the oil pan? Thx

The oil pan rots. To replace it you need to pull the engine. While the engine is out there is other stuff to do while you have it out.

That was the problem I had with my 2003 F350 diesel. When the oil pan gasket and other gaskets in the bottom of the engine started to leak I found out that the only way to replace them was to pull the engine, which also required removing the cab. Ended up costing me $7,000 to have all the gaskets replaced. Who would design a truck like that!? Hopefully you will never have that issue with your new rig.

Just power washed everything to get ready for liquid film rust treatment. Looked under the truck. The oil pan looks different than my 350s, more square, shinny silver colore, no rust at all. Maybe they gave 550 a different oil pan. The entire under chassis looks rust free. Some oil n grease accumulation at the normal places.

Just p

If it’s rust free then it probably has been replaced. Hopefully they did the manifolds at the same time as well as the rear main seal

Some guys resort to torching the cross member that runs flush underneath the oil pan, replacing the pan and then welding the cross member back into place. Many things could go wrong if not done perfectly. Weld could break, not the easiest weld since it’s a overhead position, and also the potential for a fire.

Isn’t an 03’ a 6.0 motor and not a 7.3 like we are looking at? Unless yours was built early in the year
