Pfanner Protos too small?

Hi all - Any input would be appreciated here.

I've used a Kask SuperPlasma successfully for two years, but it's pretty much always adjusted one or two clicks away from maximum. And maxed out when wearing another layer on my head. I like the Kask just fine, but I'd prefer the added side and rear protection and the stowable earmuffs of the Protos.

I just tried on a Protos, and it's too small. Strange, because the Kask and the Protos both list their range up to 62cm.

Another member posted up a solution for getting one more increment of adjustment out of the Protos (link below), but how much can it really gain?

Any other tips for large-headed folk trying to fit the Protos would be appreciated, thanks.

I bought the 1st retail Protos in the USA.
Several years ago, Pfanner - Protos told me that they could custom make a smaller than normal.
I assume that they might try to make a larger one; just might take time.
I'd contact Nick Bonner at TreeStuff.

After reading the above linked thread and looking at my Protos more carefully I found that I didn't have it adjusted all the way out. Made that final click or two of adjustment according to the instructions and have been enjoying a perfect fit for the last months or year.

I've heard back from Nick at TreeStuff, and he is quite sure that Pfanner will not make a custom suspension or shell.

I think I'm going to try buying the Protos anyway to see if I can modify it to make it work somehow.

I know Pfanner is extremely busy. I've had a very small order in for more than 2 months.
They may have changed their policy.

My Pfanner e-mail from 2014 regarding smaller size Protos:

Hi Greg!

If you need a smaller size for Protos we can adjust it to size 50 cm.
No extra costs, but spezial order!

I finally heard back from Pfanner - They said that if the standard version is too small "your local shop can order a special Protos".

When I asked how it is "special", they replied saying that the two tabs on the adjustment piece are removed (just like in the instructions in the linked thread above), giving one more size adjustment setting (1-1.5cm according to them). They recommend having the shop do it, "because the staff is trained". They recommend to remove only one line of tabs per side, and to make sure both sides are equal.

I did it myself, and it does indeed work just fine. It's fiddly, careful work to get the tabs completely removed without damaging the tabs you want to retain. You have to get the area right flat in order for the strap to seat properly.

So, not exactly a custom solution, but helpful nonetheless.

I removed the clip in the back and put an elastic with whipping twine to connect the two plastic things. I've got an odd shape head + thick hair... Kask won't fit , old petzl were ok but the new model are too tight. The protos was way to small... But with that mod it fits perfectly even without chinstrap and earmuffs on. 15243263657463609021271037280098.webp
