Fids & Fibers was in Ontario last weekend and it was an incredible time! Located in Port Lambton right on the US border, we had a great mix of Canadians and Americans. It was a full house with 12 participants and our instructor Mark Przekurat.
Mark was an amazing instructor. He is obviously very skilled but more than that I found him to be insightful, patient, and always entertaining. It was obvious he truly loves his craft and wants to share it with others.
We had a wide variety of cordage in several different constructions. We were also supplied with really great hardware as well as all the tools needed for the workshop. The tools were all very well made and worked perfectly.
Mark made a point of explaining all the materials used as well as the mechanics of the different ropes and their corresponding splices. Mark also emphasized safety throughout, encouraging us to grow our skills while at the same time communicating clearly our responsibilities for the products we create.
We spliced at least 12 hours in one day. I don’t recall anyone showing any signs of frustration or losing interest at all. It was also the first time I’ve worked splicing with a bunch of people where at least someone didn’t end up with nasty blisters at the end – another sign of a truly skilled instructor.
If you haven’t made it to a Fids & Fibers workshop before then I highly suggest you do. There is so much to learn and enjoy for every participant, whether you are a beginner or already an accomplished splicer.
Many thanks go to our gracious host Peter deVries as well as all the other participants who helped make it such a great time.
