Fids & Fibers was in Ontario last weekend and it was an incredible time! Located in Port Lambton right on the US border, we had a great mix of Canadians and Americans. It was a full house with 12 participants and our instructor Mark Przekurat.

Mark was an amazing instructor. He is obviously very skilled but more than that I found him to be insightful, patient, and always entertaining. It was obvious he truly loves his craft and wants to share it with others.

We had a wide variety of cordage in several different constructions. We were also supplied with really great hardware as well as all the tools needed for the workshop. The tools were all very well made and worked perfectly.

Mark made a point of explaining all the materials used as well as the mechanics of the different ropes and their corresponding splices. Mark also emphasized safety throughout, encouraging us to grow our skills while at the same time communicating clearly our responsibilities for the products we create.

We spliced at least 12 hours in one day. I don’t recall anyone showing any signs of frustration or losing interest at all. It was also the first time I’ve worked splicing with a bunch of people where at least someone didn’t end up with nasty blisters at the end – another sign of a truly skilled instructor.

If you haven’t made it to a Fids & Fibers workshop before then I highly suggest you do. There is so much to learn and enjoy for every participant, whether you are a beginner or already an accomplished splicer.

Many thanks go to our gracious host Peter deVries as well as all the other participants who helped make it such a great time.

Nice write-up, Robinia. I didn't see any Legos, though. ;) I think Mark is doing a great job sharing his passions. You simply can't walk away from a Fids & Fibers workshop without something.

Lemme rephrase that...You simply can't walk away from a F & F workshop without something of equal or greater value than the cost of entry. The sponsors have really come through for these events, and Mark throws down.

Where did you hear about this event? I'd love to attend one of these but they're never nearby.

I can tell you there would be plenty of interest in a F&F workshop out east. It's a desolate outpost of the tree world; nothing ever goes on here. How does one go about organizing one of these?

I'm not on FB either, can you or Mark keep us posted? I'm interested in getting into splicing as well as my one daughter!
Devon
Devon, I'm another one that's not tied up in the big book. I think missing some gatherings and events is a bit of the trade-off to be "off grid".

I've talked with @markprz about this a little bit, so hopefully he begins to feed the TreeBuzz channel with more goods and updates.

In any case, you will not be let down should you get to attend a F&F Workshop.

Awesome thanks, yes I don't need any other distractions like FB or I'd never leave the house or my phone ! My wife takes care of my FB business page. Thanks for doing that and letting him know

There is one in the Sarnia area the weekend of Dec 3rd. Capacity was limited. Not sure if it sold out already.
