Zen Knut

A photo sent in by Ox got me to thinking about a simple self advancing Knut(Makh A.) hitch. The knut used like this is easily advanced using one hand and almost no slack forms in the system. The knut is advanced when it comes into contact with the biner on the fixed end. I used an anchor hitch on the fixed end of the climbing rope because a scaffold hitch was larger in diameter and cluttered the space. Of course the saddle bridge goes in the red biner.

The only gear required is two ANSI approved biners(note one in my photo is not), a tress cord and a climbing rope. This is an untested set up at this point but I do hope to give it a try later today.

Your opinions please.

Thanks,

Dan

A photo of the Zen Knut in one handed advancement mode. Note how the knut is advanced by the biner on the fixed end of the climbing rope. The saddle bridge goes in the red biner. I will use a tress cord with scaffold knots instead of the eyed cord in the photos. I don't like how eyed tress cords move around on a biner.

TreeCo,

It looks like that set up would tail nicely, but aren't biner to biner attachments frowned upon? I know they are not allowed in competition but is there actually anything in ANSI that would make this set up improper? It looks like it would also help to be ambidextrous (sp?).

Let us know how it tests out for you, I think I will give it a try as well.

That is where the photo from Oxman influenced me. I was looking to eliminate that $100. micropulley.http://www.treebuzz.com/forum/download.php?Number=65881

If a micropulley can connect two biners together then biner to biner should be ok. One of the reasons biner to biner may not be a good idea is movement and cross loading of the gates. In the Zen Knut the scaffold knoted tress cord would keep the biners from cross loading the gate.

Thanks for the feedback.

i've done similair; whereby the link to lifeline is also the tender. Both with no 2nd krab; all coneections and tending functions performed by the red krab; or as pictured.

1 thing i noticed; was that the krab tender's pass thru must be very small; to make sure the friction hitch wouldn't pull through it; to invert the tending function to auto/ full time tending descend when loaded; rather than tending only ascent when tail is pulled down.

I really dont like the way the tail end of the climbing line is tampering with the carabiner gate regardless of wether it is a screw gate or triple action self locking or a Petzl ball lock. And it does not matter which way round the silver carabiner is either.

It does work I just tried it. It jammed from time to time when I tried to pull on it. Not very refined.

Your tail end of the climbing line is moving through sliding over your attachment knot, it could possibly loosening it.

I'm sorry to hear it jammed. I gave it a try in a small tree today using 3/8 stay-set and didn't have any jamming problem. I do perfer the vt over the knut. Thanks for giving it a try.

I use the knut everytime i climb. I had experimented with the VT, blakes, others as well but, i love the knut. It tends nicely very smooth takes little to no effort to tail. My personal fav. For those that aren't set in their old ways and will give it a chance i think will like it. Just my opinion though. Good knot
