YoYo Man...we need your help...

Good morning Mr. YoYo. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, consists of two parts. The first task is to develop a drone accessory that will allow us to carry a throwball, with throwing line attached, and deliver it to the limb crotch of our choosing. Considering the other projects you have seen through to completion I think this one won't be much of a challenge for you (but will probably help you stop obsessing on the bowline, at least for a while). The next task will be to design a drone accessory that is capable of cutting and carrying cone samples from the tippy tops of the conifers needing to be sampled. Cone picking is a really Big time industry for the climbers in Europe and I'm trying to convince my buddies of the viability of this idea. As always, should you or any member of your team be caught or killed, the Buzzers will disavow all knowledge of your actions. This message will self-destruct within five seconds...

Well to start with we will mount a sevo that drops one of my small weights I use to access tall trees. I think the line will pay out well using the finger pinky method with the coil mounted under the drone. A second servo will be used to drop the other end. Now picking cones...
;-)

Let's cut to the chase. What about the drone with grapple and saw that can cut, hold and bring a limb to the ground? With a mounted camera.

Yeah, drones would have a hell of a time in some of the limby trees I climb. Wreck one and I'm sure you would think twice about flying it anywhere in dense foliage

The weight limitations might make it a little hard to put any sort of saw on a flying drone. Most drones operate along a fine line balancing performance/weight/flight time. My 1st gen phantom started getting flight issues when I hung a second gopro from it. Not inconceivable to over-power a drone, look at some of the heavy lift multicopters people are showing off on youtube, but you trade lift for battery life.

Control is another issue, especially when you start thinking about adding the torque from a running chain. You'd also need some way of either putting pressure on the limb being cut or a clamp to hold the system in position. Maybe a clamp claw like the chainsaw buddy or the B&D Alligator chainsaw shears thingy.

We'll overlook that minor issue of a running chainsaw flying around the neighborhood, controlled by a remote control unit... I'm sure nobody will mind...

"Oh, damn. I've whacked Mrs. Peabody's head off while she was hanging up the wash to dry. Probably dulled the chain, again."

Hope you don't think you're going to get off that easy, do you? Hell, you list your occupation as "pilot ", this should be right up your alley...V1 and Rotate...

The two of you really should meet.
I see he lives just down the mountain from me so it's a definite possibility. I'll have to wait a little while to make sure I can deal with him cause of how much he irratated me with that unsafe bowline thread. When he first posted that thread I had never really gotten active on the buzz due to some bad experiences over ten years ago. He got my dander up so much I was going to break my silence and, thank your gods, you buzzers came to my rescue and immediately got on him and saved me from making a fool of myself, again.

Let me know when the meeting happens, I want to be there. Once you see me, I think you will remeber who I am.

Looking at the possibilities of setting a line with a drone too. Can you clarify for me what you mean by a 'sevo' or 'servo'?

Thanks

A small motor with a feedback loop to control the range of an actuator arm that's attached to the shaft. Commonly used in radio controled applications. Requires a receiver and a driver circuit, as the control signal is usually PM (pulse width modulation) from the transmitter. RC cars and planes, etc. use them to steer the vehicle, move the rudder, elevators, etc. and they're essential items for a good UFO hoax.
