I had the same reaction! Good for you for trusting your instincts.

I also don't think I've done a tree that bad....in that setting anyhow, with primaries on one side and houses on two others.

It looks to be 90-100 feet tall...seems you might need a 55 foot bucket to get as much stuff out of the way as possible, then somehow find one with more boom....

A telescoping boom mobile lift would probably be the best option.

Re: You Know It\'s Bad When You Walk Away From A Fr

There have been several occassions where I got a call from other tree companies to have me come with my 70' bucket to help on dangerous trees that they were smart enough to call for a bucket with more reach. One was an oak that a climber started up and said it felt hollow and then started to feel like rubber!I was pretty nervous doing it out of the bucket!!!
Don't be afraid to call another company and ask for assistance.I generally run the singleman side hung bucket on my Hi-Ranger but I'll switch to the big old 2 man wrap around bucket on something like that tree so it can be cut and thrown easier.Therefor avoiding shaking the tree through rigging(it doesn't look like it could handle a much movement).

In regards to my last post I have also done trees for other tree companies and told them rather than pay me to come help me on a job or to help me out if I have a piece of equipment down.

This one is not a hazard anymore. 60-ton crane, bucket, power shut off to neighborhood, primary line on street dropped, streets closed to traffic. Everyone went home safe.

Wow, great ending to this story! I concur with one of the earlier posters, the progression of photos was astounding... I went from thinking "What's the big deal?" to "Holy $#it!" in a short period of time.

What I am wondering is, where were the Alpiners or oversized buckets all this time? A large (70'+) bucket truck or one with a platform, that allowed you to dismantle this tree without rigging/loading it would have worked, I think. I used to own an 80' Holan that would have done the job, as long as it got inside the wires. Definitely a specialty piece of equipment, but the platform buckets are pretty common these days.

I've got some pics of this job coming. I had a great time doing it but I don't think Glenn had as much fun as I did. Truly a professional job well done.

Re: You Know It\'s Bad When You Walk Away From A Fr

I found this tree on google maps street view. Comparing the pictures you posted and the pictures on google it looks like it lost at least one large limb after you took the photos and before it was removed.

Glad you got the Power Co. to cooperate. I would think if you showed them pictures of the decay, and told them it would land on their lines they would come around. Our power company is pretty easy to work with here. We cooperate on jobs like this (power lines in the way) with Asplundh pretty often. But, I work for the city, not a private company.
