We just recently bought a 600ft spool of XTC White 16 strand and I was thinking about trying to learn how to splice 16 stand with it. I figure I will have plenty to learn on so screwing up will not be so bad. However I thought I heard that Yales XTC was just about the most difficult 16 strand to splice. Is that true? Should I not even bother trying to splice it?

I dont' think any of the 16 strands are all that bad except the neopro first run stuff. That was brutal but then again I love 16 strand splicing.

I don't think it's any tougher than the rest. Any of them can give you problems if you're not patient at any time. I have a piece of the xtc that i just recently splice and it's not bad stuff.

Just when hope is on the rise, I am here to shatter it!

I have spliced a bit of the white XTC over the years and it is tougher than the rest of the 16 strands. I would say that all the arbormaster lines, the colored XTCs (red/white, green/white, and the while spark, fire, pheonix set), the NER safety blue and the orange version are all pretty standard and for some reason the white XTC is noticeably tighter.

That said, it should only cause a little more "grrrr" moments, but still be very doable. You can do it, emr!!!

When I head home on Friday I could stop by and give you the pointers I have picked up. I drive through appleton. Do you have a wire clothes hanger that can be made into a wire fid with a steel ring on it? That's what I use for all my splicing. Let me know man!

I haven't spliced the 'white' XTC but have done numerous 'red/white' XTC splices, I found it quite easy to splice, but I also love splicing 16 strand. Just give it a go, like you say you've got plenty so won't matter if the first few don't come out perfect. Practice makes perfect! Good luck :)

God, I hope so.

Joshuastrees, When we bought the spool, I didnt really research the stretch a whole lot so I really cant comment on that. However, we got it to use as a light rigging line so I actually hope that it does have some stretch to it.

Casey, Thanks for the offer of help. I really wish I could take you up on your offer but Fridays are just about the worst day of the week for me and this coming Friday is even busier than normal. Maybe some other time. Let me know if you will ever be passing through midweek (I wont hold my breath). Thanks again.

Nick and Craig, thanks for the encouragement. I will take some pics of any splices that I finish. I know it will be a while before I have the time to do it, but I will post once I finish.

Awesome!

When it's time to pass the fid up for the crossover, pull extra core out. That'll bunch up the cover a bit and make it easier to get the crossover pulled through.
