putting out a product really sucks, it's exciting at first, but then depressing when you see how the world works; i wish i could make a million, but reality is, i will be lucky to make something.
i have thousands and thousands spent on this already, and guess what, every time it changes hands, everyone wants to mark it up and actually get a bigger peice of it.
here is the general rules, I get 20% over the product cost, a distributer usually wants 20% and the arborist store or catalog wants 35-40% or else they won't even list it.
who takes all the risk? Me. With these figures, I might get $15 to $20 per ring and sling.
But then figure in my proto type costs, all the break testing costs (paying my guys on the clock to work on testing instead of making money doing tree work, plus all the broken slings), plus paying independant tester, plus travel and shipping stuff around). Plus expo costs, around $2000. Plus insurance for the new company for possible advertising lawsuits and liability. It's depressing, I'm suprised any new products ever are produced. A distributor is willing to help me keep the prices down a bit, so that will help.
