This is a very old log that has been down for well over 75 years. Luckily there was no ground contact so it is fit a fiddle. I haven't counted but looking at the rings I would guestamate the age at over 600 yrs old. The old stuff has the most beautiful brown, maroon, and purple colors, unlike the 2nd growth which has that pink color that most folks associate with redwood..

Many years ago my buddy and I found an old cedar butt maybe 6 feet across up in Seymore Arm at the end of our lake. It was way down off the side of the main logging road in the shade of the now 150 foot tall second/ third growth. It was hiding under a foot of moss and small seedlings living in the compost on top of the log, we got 36" thick bolts of pristine shake wood out of that probably 2 cords! only an inch of rot maybe? It had to be laying there for 50 years or so? We could have been fined by the ministry of forests at the time because we didn't have a permit to harvest but the locals don't care, they're all dope growin hill folk so not much ratting gonna happen there LOL

Here's another this is from Jersey you can see Upper and Lower Manhatten in background in foreground is MetLife Stadium and behind that is Xanadu look it up very interesting. The red angled top was going to be an indoor ski area now I think they are making another mall.

This Willow Oak was near the Collins family cemetery. There was a guy burried there who fought in the war of 1812 and a Lieutenant who fought in the Civil war. The tree was damaging grave stones and had some large vertical cracks in the trunk. We lowered branches on the cemetery side before felling into a field.
