wire fids

i wanna see some pics of your home made wire fids. im gonna make one to start splicing some 16 strand friction savers nd have ben playing with, a coat hanger, guitar string and some steel wire. i think the coat hanger feels the most promising.

think i could use a high E string from an electric guitar for the snare? i play with 10's, lights

It won't be rigid enough to push through.

I come from a wire rope background so I found things to be a little frustrating at first. A small tool I made helps to extract the core.

Just a loop of 14 GA wire, insert at the extraction point run it towards the end of the rope an inch or so extract and pull. Exposes the core so you can use your awl with a little less frustration. Especially on tighter rope like Tachyon, Blaze or Blue Moon...
