Anyone have recommendations and or the pros and cons of cable or rope for my winch on my bandit 254. I’m looking to put as much length as I can without it getting all tangled up in the winch box. In CT we have a lot of rocks and rock walls that the cable rubs up against and was wondering if I should stay with cable, or go with rope?

We have used AmSteel blue for a number of years and have had good success with it. With your "ultra" abrasive environment you might experience too much wear from the rocks. Steel cable will probably be your best bet. Going back with steel will also keep you from having to polish all of the winch hardware (in preparation for the synthetic line)

We use Samson Amsteel 12 (not blue) or new England Ropes Endura 12. Both work great in the northeast. We use 3/8" and can fit 150' on our Vermeer 1800's and Morbark 15".

Stay away from double braids, in the harsh environment we winch across; pavement, rocks, dirt, trees, etc, the out jacket will ripe and then inhibit the winches use as the jacket gets hung up and causes big bunches.

Good luck!

oh and I hate steel cable, its sharp, it frays, and when it breaks it recoils like a pissed off camel!
