Who all still runs 288\'s

Wondering if I am a dying breed here. I keep a Husky 288XP Lite in the fleet and its my baby. The quit sending them to the US some time ago and so i know a lot of em are in scrap piles now. Is anyone else still swinging one? I like it over some newer saws even though its heavy and vibrates.

I wish we did. Had ours rebuilt three years ago and it died again last year. Replaced it with a 390xp but it doesn't seem to perform as good as the 288 did. All time favorite was a 285cd I owned back in the early eighties. That saw kicked arse big time!

We still run a 288xp at times, it is like and old hunting dog that stil gets the game. It is usd at times when we are doing selective logging and hedgerow thining, still running strong. We did the 390xp testand well settled for the 395xp to repalce it.

I still run a 288XP and love it! It could use a compression release though. Just pulled out the last "new" 262 I had to set up using on crane jobs.

Now i dont feel so silly with that old dog in my hands. I would like to pick up a hi-body air filter for it, and a high body top cover. let it breath a little better to match the new ported muffler.

Re: Who all still runs 288\'s

We just put a bar and chain on ours today after not using it for 10 years because we couldn't find anyone around here to fix it.(Mostly everyone around here deals Stihl, but we finally found a place close by) We also own a 257 Husky that Dad has had for awhile also. He saws its the best saw for its class. No current saw comes close, not even a Stihl he said. And the best part is, both were free(if I remember right)he won them at a small logging show they had here in town. A year apart if I remember right. A quick question on the 288 though. We just put the bar and chain on today and noticed the chain brake is hard to engage and disengage. Its not like the newer ones(smooth) its rough. Is this just from not being used for so long. We had it checked out and they said it was good, just wanted to double check on here and see if anyone knew why it would be like that. Thanks alot!!

Re: Who all still runs 288\'s

I've been running this saw since it came new out of the box. Many a cord wood was cut using this saw. A lot of big trees also felt the sting of its teeth.
I had the 88 before the XP version and scorched the cylinder and so I gave it to my brothers partner and he fixed it up and is still using it.

Old saws never die they just get used less and less. Its hard to throw away such tried and true pieces of equipment. I have my first 020 and my first Pro Mac six.
