Where are you guys starting your double braid taper

hey y'all,

Where are you starting your taper on the cover for a double braid splice. I've typically been starting it 4 strands from the crossover going 4-4-5-4-4-5 for a total of 12 strands. If I remember correctly I got that in my notes from yales directions. However on the the new tree-u splicing series from treestuff Nick suggests starting a short fid length from the crossover and doesn't do a pattern just pulls 12 randomly.

Just curious where you all start your tapers at and what pattern you use. Also are you guys putting the crossover 8 strands out from the eye mark? Nick does about a 1/2" in the video which on Yale 11.7 comes out to only about 5 strands

Thanks,
Chizmin

I start my strand reduction 8 strands from the crossover point, then depending on manufacturers rope, I pull a "V" at 5-5-5, or 5-4-5-4. Again, depends on the rope manufacturer. I never reduce 50%, 35-40% maximum. I hope this helps, neighbor!

Interesting that you don't reduce 50%. I've seen it both ways, for example I've seen 12 strands and 10 strands taken out on a 24 strands rope. (Always in pairs or a "V" like you said.) I wonder if it makes a notable difference in strength of the splice. Starting 8 strands form the crossover seems like a good compromise between the 4 strands in yales instructions and the 3+ inches in the tree-U splicing series
