When do you know it's time??

I could still make money with it though;) I called the guy today and sent him an email. He has not gotten back to me. I will try again tonight. If no response, then I am moving on to something else.

I saw this one too, but he wants 50 grand for it. I like that he added the rack over the cab, makes it look more like a tree truck than an electric company truck.

Yes but you loose all that space out back. I have a 60' rm. many of times the bumper is at the tree trunk.

Hey, you could make money with either one. Lots of stuff I buy is based on what is on the used market at the time I guess. Except I always buy a new pickup every 5 years and bought new on the 2 Dingo s I have as they don't last that long. First one is $17 k and second is $50 k. Second one is 4by and may? be over center. Over center is not a deal breaker imo and it adds weight I'm sure. 4x4 is nice, but not that nice $.

Ive seen that truck up close. Not bad but heavy and only 55 i think.

Dont rush keep looking imo. I waited a year for mine. One owner, one operator. The wait has paid off in no break downs and pristine condition. Winters around the corner and 2wd or 4wd buckets don't jump snow piles.

I run a rear mount 60 foot rear mount with a chip truck an cant wait too turf it an get a forestry unit 75 foot altec an make the chip truck into a wood/ chip truck with a lid you can remove an far as working over your truck either way you use a rope most of your day any ways if you go trimming or line clearing you have to send chip truck an bucket truck more wear an tare an fuel most jobs you can due with one truck

this truck is a 55 as it's listed as a "60' working ht." I cut off all that tool box crap on both of my pickers and last one I sold. My truck boxes looked just like your link when I bought it. I bought this truck maybe 12 years ago. It is a Teco Vanguard 75' working ht. Same Cat Diesel. No overcenter, no material handler. Don't think I want to hang a log or leader while up 75' onto my own bucket and hope for the best. I get a crane in for that.

the altec will be a lrv 60 70 e will be our next buy but yh ropeing vs not roping you have your pros an cons one bounce can damage something an 75% of our work is roping due too payment or side walks an wires we would love too buy a boom truck but it would be a iron sitting there most days people around here most of them look at cheapest bid an that's who they go with what kind of ticket due you need where your from treevet ? here weed a 100 hrs under a journey person with the 8 ton ticket or the full crane operaters which is I believe like 4 or 8000 hr apprenticeship an once you have ur 100 hrs its a 2 day course for your 8 ton ticket but 8 tons is useless for tree picking

I am on my 4th crane woodchucker and it is a 100' plus 47' jib 25 tonner. My first crane job was in early '70's and been doing em ever since. Did one every day this week and did one today and not tomorrow, but next day. Never had to have ANY ticket or cert. but likely I know at least as much as anyone that has those things. We discuss all picks on noise cancelling headsets as to how much we are good for, how much piece weighs and where it goes after the cut. Made a 5k pick today, nothing dramatic but we do them all the time.

we use any where from a 50 ton crane to a 200 ton crane depends on side reach an height we need mostly use a 90 ton crane due too how fair off side mostly in tight spots with no room for landing wood an brush crane jobs go in spurts an theres a lot of companies who rather spend a week busting there humps an doing big trees for pretty well free knock your selfs out boys i love doing big trees but i love knocking 2 or 3 mid size trees of in a day an maken better money

Unless you're doing 15' dia redwoods and big eucs you don't need any 50 to 200 ton cranes to pick up lil ole trees. You got to set em up farther away than say a 25 to 35 tonner and often then don't fit anyway. We don't get any easy removals hardly anymore, most of em are taken by the door knockers and everyone in a given area knows usually the 3 or so tree companies that handle the behemoths. But yeah, 2 or 3 mid size trees can be as challenging at times as one big mo. Tree I did yesterday could NOT be done without a crane, no matter how much you brag at the bar about em.

Gorman, agreed. It's just hard to find a used private sale bucket right now.

Treevet- I know, it's hard to just be starting off. In a perfect work I would drop a lot of money on all new equipment and get exactly what I want. However, you have to crawl before you can walk. Is a 55 big enough? What about some of the utility bucket trucks? ones with a winch on the upper boom rated for 1000-2000 lbs. They are rear mount with a reach of 60 feet. Not sure of the reach of them though as for as over center or not.

Look at the reach charts of any boom you are considering.
Non-over centers will make you angry for tree work... they are for backing up to telephone poles.
Would not even consider a forestry body, so many people told me rear 60' rear mount
We have a 1999 rear mount altec am855 mounted on a short wheel base international 4900 flatbed. When we bought it there was 2800hrs on pto/boom. DT466e, allison auto.
The boom is double over center, four out riggers, 2000lb rated material handler.
Ex utility truck, not a utility bed though, short flat bed with bolt on tool boxes that we removed most of.
We paid $28,500. The same dealer had forestry bodies for $10k more with way more wear and tear.
I asked the guy what the deal was? He said the forestry body trucks are beat, they are cheaper to buy at auction but they require more work to sell. Many need new engines, full paint jobs, new seats, on and on. The utility trucks are taken care of and require very little to sell.

DSCF1566.webp DSCF1564.webp admittedly an old bucket but wasn't when I bought it. '92 GMC diesel. Paid $24k in 96 I believe. Light as a feather, non over center and only TWO outriggers to set (fast set up). 55' reach and today I drove around the house of a mansion to clear the guy's satellite dish. Rained hard day before...NO ruts, no boarding. I would never buy a non 2 man bucket as I have to be able to stack some wood, carry 2 saws with a big one at times...

I love to buy stuff and can vicariously go thru it with someone else for fun. Fun thread. BC 2000 parked around the corner in driveway. After that left 2000 Ford F800 with 24' dump bed came in took away every stitch of wood with room to spare.

belive me we go with the best crane for every job the tornado we had a 200 ton crane picking trees boomed out 180 degrees with every boom he had too pick trees we had the room an the size of trees an where we had too reach them was only a job for the 200 pretty cool picking 5 foot across black an red oaks one cut an lay them on the street an had a big dropstat grinder cleaning up all the limbs trees an stumps along the street
