What's that magic cut?

Re: Magic Cut?

Biggest crane pick I've ever taken was an entire 100 foot euc at the zoo with a 120 ton hydrocrane that weighed 14 tons.

I had the CO put minimum up pressure on the pick, which was pretty much vertical. Telling him I just wanted him to hold it upright while I zip cut the base about a foot off the ground. Letting the entire tree stab itself into the ground while he held it upright.

I made the cut with a 394 XP and ran like hell as it neatly slid off the stump and stabbed the ground and pirouetted in its hole.

I just wanted to see if that much weight would slide off a huge diagonal zip cut, and it sure as gravity did.

May have been crazy for both me and the CO to do. But it worked, with the ground absorbing the 14 ton impact, not the crane, which just held it upright.

Zip cuts are handy in both big and small diameter wood is what I'm saying. At least when dealing with vertical picks at times when a smooth quick departure is desirable.

Re: Magic Cut?

Please remember to never use a zip cut on a vertical trunk section unless the top of it is supported by a lowering line, or it will kick back and kill you on the lower trunk below the cut.

Picture a square cut diagonally into two triangles Evan.

The line above represents four very steep zip cuts.

Re: Magic Cut?

zip cut, salami cut, spear cut, etc. Works good with a little undercut too if you have good aim with your bar.

This thread turned out better than I had hoped, thanks for the good discussion.

Re: Magic Cut?

Yes Evan.

But again, that cut is almost suicidal to use on big trunk wood unless it's roped off securely from a higher separate lowering point, and you know for a fact which direction it has to move towards. Away from you!
