What to do after removing lag screws from pine tree?

A new neighbor has two 1/2" lag screws in a large pine that were put there by previous owners years ago. There's almost two inches of unthreaded shank showing, so they're probably at least five inches long. He wants to remove them, but he's not sure what to do after that. He's been able to turn them a little with a wrench. What's the best thing to do after taking them out?

First, thighten them just a teeeeny bit to break the threads out of the wood then loosen. If the heads are square use an eight point socket, which isn’t common, or an adjustable wrench or pipe wrench. If the head is a hex try and find a six point socket or twelve which is the most common.
Unscrew and do nothing. The tree will grow new tissues to close the hole
