what does topping or round overs do

it all depends... the knee jerk reaction to topping as an offense to mother nature shows the present bias in the industry.. a better perspective might be.. "it all depends"..

on species, age, size, condition (especially species). reduction pruning s a beautiful thing when done properly.. last February we had THE WORST ice storm (on top of heavy wet snow) that anyone can remember around here...
It is totally cool to see how little damage the trees I reduced over the past 6-10 years fared in the ordeal.. amazing ! you don;t need to take much off to protect a tree from over extending for the light... seems to me that once the tree has been reduced the limbs then build taper, so even if they re-grow the taper is enough to sure up the limb even in the worst of conditions... pictures and video coming

Of course the "present bias in the industry" was a hard-won change after decades of what was, IMHO, widespread and severe mutilation of living trees through topping. The current challenge in day-to-day treecare, it seems to me, is how to apply what apparently works well as Daniel and others have described without returning to the excesses and truly damaging practices of the past.
