What do you do about lunch?

I'm just saying if you are so keyed up to meet him, why don't you go full throttle and ask the guy to marry you?

I mean, the worst that could happen is he says no, right?

I get paid by the day. It's a big plus for myself and my crew. Hats the point of pushing hard through a job and getting done early if it ends up costing you money in the long run?

The crew pushes hard, sometimes we get done early and get to go home early. Most of the time we get pushed onto another job. Not a big deal.

We have a paid half hour of lunch. I usually order lunch via iPhone and have it delivered. We work til the food gets there, eat, then get back to work. Half hour still taken and everyone is fed.

A hour ride in a truck doesn't count as a break. My old employer in VA tried to not pay me for drive time between jobs. It's bullcrap. I don't want to be in that truck and i didn't book the jobs so far away from one another. If I'm there and clocked in I deserve to be paid. Period.

Blinky, you bring up great points. I try to run the crew I would want to work for. It might be a little more laxed then other but we have a very low turn over rate and have brought in record money in the company history.

Previous foreman ran me ragged and pushed through lunch and yelled constantly. The numbers speak for themselves.

It's amazing how many employers aren't familiar with basic FEDERAL employee law. All it takes is one disgruntled employee, and not one from the Post Office, to make a call to the Feds and the employer is in for some trouble. The workday starts when the job starts/punch in and ends at punch out.

Some days employees chose to meet at the jobsite. Generally it was so that they could take off as soon as work was finished and not have to drive back to the shop. That was their choice so they punched in when the full crew got to the jobsite..no travel pay.

Federal law is nothing to take lightly.

If you're not familiar with employer responsibility, make some calls or join TCIA.

Wow, more words of wisdom.

So many posts by you, so much wasted time by me reading them.

Oh, yeah, back on topic:

I send one guy out every day to the nearest starbucks... only stop. Usually, a 20 minute round trip deal. Works great. And, I get more coffee!

Lots of people feel the same way you do, Paul. Unfortunately, no one cares. I love that my thread derailing pisses you off, but if it is starting to interfere with your enjoyment of the buzz, click on my screen name, and then hit the "ignore user" button.

Your experience on the buzz will be so much more enjoyable.

And Starbucks puts 2-3 ounces of cat piss in every cup they sell.

Why did breaks and lunch become mandatory? Because studies done back around the beginning of the 20th century found that workers were more productive and less prone to injury. The body needs time to recover from strenuous work.

I've worked through breaks and lunch but in the end found it counter-productive. Yes, the crew can rest while traveling between jobs but the driver is still working not relaxing. It's easy to get caught up in the time and motion study of the work day but not really pick up on the long term effects of continuous effort without breaks.

We incorporate any stop for coffee or food in the break or lunch time. This encourages packing a lunch. If food is needed and we're working at a single site then we'll send one person to get it while the rest work. The person going for the food is working albeit not on tree work.

No matter how I'm paid or whether I'm working for myself or someone else I still take the requisite breaks and lunch bearing in mind that it's going to maintain my and the crew's productivity through better morale far better than going without pause.

Why is it so hard for companies to abide by simple labor laws? This cost of doing so is part of the cost of doing business and thus should be incorporated in the bid/estimating practices of any legitimate company.

Getting refocused and psyched up in the middle of the day is no harder than doing it in the morning.

On another note, I heard something that I found very ironic: Many of the Jersey police depts pay officer off the books for doing traffic duty. UM, what's wrong with that picture???

Precisely. "Free estimates" are a part of doing business, it all gets added into the job costing.

But you did say "legitimate" companies, Treehumper. That kind of answers your question.

happy hour starts at 4:30 so just as long as I get a few cheap beers its ok.

I just transferred from Va to Pa. In Va we didn't take lunch. We ate on the run and just didn't want to take the 30 mins to sit down and eat. In Pa we take the 30 mins 95% of the time. I find the 30 mins blended in to the day and getting off of work early isn't worth a decent break.

I do feel better in the later part of the day than I did in Va, but I am at work for 30 more mins so I might be missing happy hour. Clash of the titans.

ok here is what I really do!! I make a loop out of a coat hanger and put it around the necks of the crew witha large succulent steak dangling just out of reach . they chase it all day long dragging brush a great distance all the while never really being allowed to eat it or touch it.....if they do I fire them on the spot and proceed to scream at them how pathetic and soft they are!!! Sissy, Mary, and fairy are frequently screamed at the top of the lungs.
lunch, lunch? LUNCH!? who needs lunch? I mean most of the time I eat mine in the truck between estimates or on the way to the dump while the weaker vessels sit down...i mean they actually sit down... are ya kiddin me! WEak.Be tough yall
NOW lets see what kind of feedback we get from that one?!

I buy lunch every day for the five of us. Usually about $40 bucks a day, sometimes only $20 (Usually chinese or places we frequent often cut us a break). Almost every property we work there is somewheres to pick up food only a couple minutes away. I have most of the places in my phone, so just place the call and go. Today we were working in Moorestown at an estate property. One of the few area where it takess me a little longer to get food. I needed the break anyway. Subway sandwiches for everyone, took me about 20 to 25 minutes round trip to get. Still made our day rate and we were back by 4:30. Tommorrow on the other hand I have a job in Pilesgrove (middle of nowheres). First time I'll be packing a lunch for the crew this year.

Here was a shot from Tuesdays job. Took the guys to a pizza place down the street. We all just wanted to get away from this job. Finished the tree from beginning to end with stump, got home at six. Was a long hard day. Also had the pleasure of having to deal with honey bee hive on this tree. I guess more Steve's problem because he did all the cutting. No one got stung though, they are pretty docile.

Our crews generally go out for lunch. Either by stopping between jobs or by driving to a close eatery. Personally, I like time away from the job site. It's also nice to get out of the heat for a while and let your body relax.

Lunch is unpaid wether it be 30-60 min. Don't care how long it takes you to eat as long as you get your quota in for the day.

To answer the original question, if we're working in town, we hit a restaurant and have lunch (I buy). If we're in the woods, we pack in a lunch.

Waste of man-hours, perhaps; but I own the place, so who's gonna complain?
