What are these from?

I was going to be un-helpful and say they look reminiscent of Chinese lanterns before the color comes in. I've seen them before, but never cared enough to look them up, still don't really care.. There's my help for the day..

I'm a little surprised that NRCS doesn't consider that an obligate wetland plant...I've never seen it anywhere but obvious wooded wetlands. Nice native understory option for those areas.

Once those dry out it can sound a bit like a rattle snake to give a small tree a little shake...

Don't recall learning this in school or seeing them out and about around here either. Pretty cool.
I've never seen one in landscape setting. When I was doing forestry full time, I'd see them maybe once a month - so they aren't over abundant.

They grow along the Missouri River in the southeast corner of this state... but I don't think I've ever seen them anywhere else, here. I only remember them because they reminded me of Tomatillos. Which reminds me of green chili sauce. Which makes me want to go out and have some Mexican food. Damn it. Nothing open.
