What are some fun things to do once in the canopy?

Refer to the famous scene in "The Wild Trees", our heroes in love set up two treeboats (at some absurd height) one above the other and dispensed with harnesses. The idea is that if things got too rambunctious the second hammock would catch a fall. As it turns out the second hammock served the way a wide bed does, provides a place for a solo snooze after the fun is done.

Oh damn, what a buzz kill, I spoke about the practical realities of sex in trees ;-) It's kind of like sex in the back seats of small cars, ultimately less fun than might first be envisioned. Apologies for the cold shower.

Edit: But wait! Can we bring this into tree climbing competitions? This will no doubt lead to heavily enhanced and repurposed rescue dummies. Same as competition rescue protocols, no actual sex allowed but the "sexcuer" must talk their way through every step so judges can hear them. No no no, don't go there!

It would almost certainly boost attendance! Modifying dummies could get expensive however. Perhaps just hold auditions at a local college campus and let some co-eds play the part. Of course, participants and the 'dummies' would need extensive practice together ahead of time, in order to make a good showing!

Thoughts from (my twisted) self:
  • How to rig a sex partner in the canopy 101 & ASR ((Advanced Sex Rigging) ...
potentially becoming fully accredited ISA approved courses)
  • Sex-swings are a thing (not to be confused with swingers, but there may be some cross-over)
  • How about a OB-GYN who performs routine examinations in trees, using a suspended exam table, complete with stirrups? Who else besides me is a self-proclaimed freelance ob-gyn?

Ok now that this thread has been totally destroyed ;-) I still think the best thing to do in a tree is find a nice high perch, get a good relaxed position and just sit back with the view, let your thoughts wander, find a little peace, you/we deserve it.

For example, a climb from this past summer, absolutely nothing happened, perfect.

Ok, something happened, I got a text while I was throwing, I turned the phone off.

Well that was sublime to watch. Beautiful view, what do you use for mosquitoes? They looked like they were attacking the camera pretty good the first day.

In '99 the ISA Conference/ITCC was in Stamford, CT. On one of the days 5-6 of us took the train into The CIty. Our goal was a tour around Central Park. There was an allee of four rows of uniform sized and spaced American elms. They were about 18-20" dbh with canopies touching. I saw the perfect place to run four teams in the way that Treeverse and Andrew suggested. Somewhere along the way it would be easy to have a punkin chunkin' station.

I like that setup, how about a relay race where you have to touch the climber in the next tree over?

Thx Joel!

If three viewers appreciate a slow moving video where nothing happens and no slamming guitars in the background track (I do love slamming guitars in the right place), only whining mosquitos, then I feel like it's a win ;-)

I've been though some heavy black fly and mosquito seasons when I was younger, I reached some point of "I don't care anymore". I have a high tolerance for them. When I'm moving on the ground or in a tree they are not a problem. If I'm going to be sitting still in the woods I'll make a small smudge fire out of green ferns and pine needles.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis really ramped up in late summer/early fall this year, I used DEET, my chances of getting it were slim but the consequences high so I protected myself. I was not going to stop being in the woods at dusk etc. as per official state public health proclamations.

Demo of anti-mosquito smudge burn while sitting on the edge of a red maple swamp, you can hear the little buggers whining around the camera ;-) Bouldering version of rec tree climbing, more fun things to do around trees:

While I have your attention, one more for you in the "things to do with trees recreationally" category ...

Soundtrack provided by a singing wood thrush nearby and angry hairy woodpecker (the loud peep! peep! peep!)
