I don’t think the leaves of this magnolia are quite approaching the size of M. macrophylla.Hope this doesn’t come off as “ know it all”. also have another” bigleaf magnolia” native to the east coast- magnolia macrophylla. An awesome looking tree- one of my favorites. might see one of these?
Says down to zone 5. What zone is Buffalo?

I was thinking it might just be a saucer magnolia, common urban tree planting, which is keen to put out a lot of epicormic sprouts. One of my favorites.

I thought this too, not sure if native to Buffalo but perhapsMagnolia acuminata, cucumber magnolia is supposedly native to the region and has similar looking fruit
