What’s this one?

Jonny

Been here much more than a while
Location
Buffalo
House flipper buddy asked me about pruning this tree in a little post stamp backyard in downtown Buffalo. Whatever it is, I’ve never seen it before in the 21 years I’ve been working in the area.
Seems like really soft and light wood, but I haven’t taken a saw to it yet.

Yeah it lost a lot of its canopy a while ago and has been ignored since. My hunch is it was last worked on following the motherfucker of all lake effect snow storms in early October of 06. Epicormic growth up the wazoo.

I’m just doing the bigger dead wood, broken stuff, some lower sucker growth, a small limb that’s starting to envelop the electric service line , and just enough reduction so a person can walk around without getting a stick in the or eye.

I’m also going to try growing a few from cuttings, just for shits and giggles. They can be gorgeous I think, so long as first 3 rules are location, location, and location. I’ll probably never see another around here, and it’s really trying to flourish considering what it’s been through.

Another theoretical hunch, is I can thank all the old 2 and 3 story homes built so close together, for the reason it doesn’t practically explode every time the wind blows. It reminds me of tree of heaven… but softer.

Hope this doesn’t come off as “ know it all”. also have another” bigleaf magnolia” native to the east coast- magnolia macrophylla. An awesome looking tree- one of my favorites. might see one of these?

Says down to zone 5. What zone is Buffalo?
I don’t think the leaves of this magnolia are quite approaching the size of M. macrophylla.

I was thinking it might just be a saucer magnolia, common urban tree planting, which is keen to put out a lot of epicormic sprouts. One of my favorites.

Consider pruning off a couple sprouts where there are 3-4 coming out of old topping wounds. It can be tedious, but can also really help the tree look...like a tree.

Agreed, just taking advantage of the chance to talk about it. Wish these were used more in the landscape. Saucer magnolia too

Ah, I misread your post. Copy that.

The native magnolias around here are just amazing, aren’t they? On this property we have planted just about everything but M. grandiflora (just haven’t found a decent specimen yet). M. tripetala may be my favorite to find in the wild.
