Well that sucked

I girth a loop runner (or better, a chain reactor) at some convenient spot on the main stem that leaves me with a good good working angle and tie a butterfly in the line. Then I clip in a carabiner.

If I'm following you, you're anchoring the rope mid-line, at a stronger part of the tree, lower than the access TIP set from the ground, before working, perhaps because you're going to limbwalk, and didn't load test from that angle, or just because it is more secure.

You'll have to return to this point after working to uninstall the working TIP.

To save gear, a running bowline on a bight (tie off the tail) is a useful midline anchor knot, that If I read you right, achieve the same purpose, using up some rope length.

Yup. You'd have to untie it before leaving the tree, or going up further later.

I'm just a dumb-ass old schooler still climbing DdRT, and after hearing all these horror stories, I myself have no desire to switch to SRT. I've been in this game a long time, and the number of climbers falling out of trees using SRT is shocking. Definitely wasn't like this in the old days! It appears that there are some very serious flaws in SRT, and that the risks just might outweigh the benefits. Get well Alejandro!
Rico, I think SRT is safe provided you have a bomber TIP. It has advantages and obvious drawbacks. The double old school method takes more rope and is slower, but provides mechanical advantage and is more versatile. However it puts 2 ropes in your face! I think there is a place for both. I think the main reason you here more srt accidents is because it's relatively new in tree work and people are focusing on it. SRT has been used in Yosemite and Squamish for years! And sure there have been fatalities, but in almost every case it's pilot error. Bad decision making. If we take a pair of binos to look at the area we plan to tie into, in the event it's a tall assed tree, it can help to determine the soundness of our TIP.

Rico converted to the dark side...
I am loving SRT, but I have to be very careful with some of the 2 growth Redwoods. They are notorious for their downward sloping limbs that snap off with very little effort, making it very difficult to get a safe line set sometimes. I still have to go old-school while ascending some of my Redwood jobs.

Yeah the old chandelier red cedars here do the same thing, you aim for a schoolmarm not a branch! The branches snap easy too! The bark is slippery as well! All in all, a difficult climb.
