Weird Japanese maple leaf

evo

Been here much more than a while
Location
My Island, WA
I don’t think this a bugs and crud thing. But I’m trying to figure out what in the hell my maple is up to.
We bought the house in early 2020, and this tree looked like crap. I guessed it has a 50/50 and likely was slowly on its way out. I did quite a bit of weeding invasive St John’s Wort around half the root system, RCX (manual) and took a couple of imbedded roots (one across 10-20% of the stem, and a couple over top of buttress roots). Nothing too bad and it wasn’t too deep….
I don’t recall the leaves much other than fried and curled.
This spring the tree is looking great for the most part. But the leaves are really aberrant! All over the map.
Any freaking clue?70742169949__49BB2A7A-BFC2-40E6-8977-36C05B90BE48.jpeg70742163344__3B15B0C2-2737-4541-BA5A-00AA61A2BED8.jpeg70742168190__332307FE-E697-4186-A503-47D220B0DAB3.jpeg70735812502__0C082E57-2B88-4CC3-BDF8-6128D0210F13.jpeg70735805619__58BAE33B-A241-49E8-914C-AE5E2EB347F9.jpeg

Any signs of mites on the leaves? My first thought was a bacteria carried by eriophyid mites. That can cause oddly shaped leaves to form. @KTSmith probably would be your best bet for this.

How’s this… I asked about it on a Japanese maple Facebook group. Apparently it’s a cultivar thing..
I can’t recall the name off hand, but looking at photos it appears to be correct!? Not taking it to the bank, as Facebook is what it is.

Ok found the post there “kagemata group possibly hagoromo”
