Google is setting up to kick butt on other mapping sites. You set the location and magnification for the search. Then, after the image loads, put the cursor in the page and "drive" in the direction you want. The image will track with you.

I wanted to see where Frans lives so I centered on his town. Then, I want to see where it is compared to Napa where my Sis is moving and San Fran. Easy to do without having to wait for pages to load or using the arrow scrolling.

Yeah, right. You haven't tried the site on a modem, have you? The initial image(s) takes quite forever to arrive.

At this point it's not a matter of "springing" for it. Due to my location, I'm relegated to the 50% of U.S. citizens who have dialup for their Internet connection. Believe me, if I could have it, I would!

We also dont even have cable t.v. strung up on our road. The only option is to buy a sat. dish which runs into (last I checked) $2500. plus $65.00/month.
Modem use is not too bad. Only miss it when downloading system software updates to the computer

Tom,

1st, I want to say a belated thanks for turning me on the the Google Maps.

I was just in there and noticed there is a new satillite feature. Good clear, recent sat images. Very cool. Glad my DSL service just tripled my speed and lowered my price.

That sattelite feature is frickin' awesome. I found a very extensive set of (privately owned) trails less than .5 miles of my house by looking at the map. I was looking at this area of hills nearby and saw this white squiggly line. In disbelief I biked up there, and sure as hell!

I noticed that you can't zoom in so close on rural areas, like Stanley, WI, for example.

Overall, re-friggin-markable.

The night I found the sat. images I was up until 2 am looking at things like the Grand Canyon, the Cascade volcano peaks, Boundary Waters, the Mall in DC. I've got to find the view of the pyramids at Chichen Itza.

Too cool, and FREE!

Hmm, (thought) I did [ url=http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=29.840644,47.988281&spn=78.826069,129.902344&hl=en ]whole world[ /url ] (withouth the spaces inside the braces. I'll try it again...

whole world

Maybe I'd forgot to specify the protocol "http://"? I think it works now.

The one time I don't preview the post and check the link before posting, and see what happens...

Thanks for cleaning up the link. When I found the original link I was up until way to early in the morning looking at the Grand Canyon, Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Jeff Jepson's house, Mt. Rainier. Now I can peek into backyards all over the world :)
