What’s the best method to save saplings? I get all sorts of saplings and would like to save some to plant in my yard and share with neighbors. Do I transfer them into pots or a raised beds or both.

Both.... easier to keep alive in the ground. Easier to move out of pots. I'd use air pots or fabric bags instead of traditional pots to limit encircling roots.

Instead of digging up volunteers to put in pots, collect seeds and germinate straight in the pot

Also look into root pruning seedlings in ever enlarging diameters while they are in the ground a season or two or three before transplanting. This will give the seedling a more condensed root system a higher percentage of which can be dug at transplanting time. I've moved quite a few seedlings over the years and its very discouraging discovering main roots that run multiple feet outside of the root ball being dug.
